Schuepfer, Charles H.
"Charlie"
Formerly of Willow Grove, PA and most recently of Fassett, PA passed away on
Wednesday morning, July 28, 2010 at the Bradford County Manor following
declining health at the age of 82.
Born on September 30, 1927, Charlie was the son of the late Charles &
Elsie Bauman Schuepfer. He married Margaret Beal on January 21, 1950 in
Philadelphia, PA. A veteran, he served in the US Army. He was a baker by trade
but owned several businesses. Charlie's last business was
Pepperidge Farm Route before retirement to Myrtle Beach, SC. He loved the
beach and sand, as well as, oil painting and volunteering at animal shelters.
He is remembered as a hard working family man. Surviving is his loving family,
wife and companion of 60 years, Margaret Beal Schuepfer; their loving
children, Margaret "Marge" (Richard) Fulmer, Gillett, PA; Susan
Adams, Quakertown, PA; Karen Angelichio, Durham, NC; five grandchildren,
Richard (Billie) Fulmer, Matthew Adams, Janice (Jan) Szablicki, Samantha
(Richard) Maschi, Lena Angelichio; five great grandchildren, Ashley and Ryan
Fulmer, Kara and Jason Maschi, Kathryn Szablicki; sister, Elsie (Otto) Welch,
Richboro, PA; brother, Fred Schuepfer, Trevose, PA; several nieces, nephews
and family friends.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his sisters, Eleanor
(William) Gimbel and Doris (Joe) Ruger.
A memorial service for the family will take place at a later date in White
Marsh Memorial Gardens, Horsham PA. Please direct any memorial donations to
your local SPCA.
LOPRESTE, Dominic A.
A longtime resident of the Town of Southport passed away Wednesday morning,
July 21, 2010 at the Robert Packer Hospital at the age of 85 following
complications from cancer.
Born on July 16, 1925 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Dominic was the son of
the late Anthony & Margaret Esposito Lopreste. He was a Southside High
School graduate. In serving his country, Dominic was a WWII US Navy Veteran.
He was employed by the Remington Rand; the A&P Plant, where he was a
secretary and business agent for the Local Teamsters Union; and was also
employed by ID Booth and Kennedy Valve. Dominic was a communicant of St.
Mary's Church. He enjoyed working with his hands as he accomplished many home
improvement projects. Dom also enjoyed the challenge of repairing most
anything he found that was broken. If it broke most of the time he would
figure out a way to fix it. Of course those of us that knew him will miss this
wit and his unique special sense of humor.
Surviving are sisters, brothers and several nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his beloved wife, Antoinette Bonsignore Lopreste.
In honoring his wishes there will be no services and he will be interred at
Sts. Peter & Paul's Cemetery with his wife, Antoinette Lopreste.
Goodwin, Larry D.
Formerly of Elmira and presently residing in Horseheads passed away
unexpectedly at the Cleveland Clinic following declining health at the age of
68.
Born on February 9, 1942, Larry was the son of the late Adrian & Zelma
Johnson Goodwin. He married Donna Thomas on December 23, 1960 in Kansas City,
KS. A carpenter by trade, Larry was self employed. His many interests included
auto racing, playing cards and the outdoors.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion of 50 years, Donna Thomas
Goodwin, Horseheads; their loving children, Jill (Gary) Baker, Horseheads; Jan
(Bryan) Shaw- Bliss, Elmira Heights; Joy Collins, Elmira; Jeff (Amy Harris)
Goodwin, Pine City; nephew, Danny (Yvonne) Goodwin along with their children,
Danielle and Jimmy, Elmira; grandchildren, Kyle (Heather) Baker, Kurt (Angie)
Baker , Cassie Collins, Molly Collins and Jordon Goodwin; great grandson,
Nolan John Baker; sisters, Bobbi Metcalf, WA; Betty (Leroy) Frady, TX;
brother, Don (Patti) Goodwin, MO; several nieces and nephews and family
friends.
In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his grandson, Brandon
Shaw on May 10, 2003 along with several siblings.

"Jack"
A lifelong resident of Elmira passed away peacefully at the Arnot-Ogden
Medical Center on Tuesday morning, June 29, 2010 at the age of 76.
Born on June 21, 1935 in Elmira, Jack was the son of the late Charles &
Dorothy Wilson Whipple. He was married to Alice Day Whipple and she
predeceased him on January 10, 2005 following 39 years of marriage. Jack was
employed by Zeiser Wilbert Vault Inc. until his retirement. He attended
Riverside United Methodist Church, enjoyed gardening and loved helping
neighborhood children.
Surviving is his beloved son, Arthur (Jean Rossettie) Whipple, Elmira;
brothers, Jerome (Julie) Whipple, Elmira; Edward Whipple, Erin; James
(Florence) Whipple, VA; Harry (Roberta) Whipple, FL; several nieces, nephews,
great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents, Jack was
predeceased by a sister-in-law, Barb Whipple. Family and friends will be

Walton, Jared L.
Of Elmira went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 16, 2010
at the age of 29. Born in Sayre, PA on April 21, 1981; Jared was the son of
Thomas & Linda Wetherbee Walton.
Jared excelled in basketball, enjoyed music and most of all loved Jesus.
Overcoming his own pain, Jared reached out to and befriended many others in
need of love.
His life changed forever when the apple of his eye arrived, daughter and best
friend, Rowan. They spent countless hours together and in a brief time left a
lifetime of memories. In addition to Rowan Walton, Jared's family that he

Riker, Frank E.
Of Lakeland, FL passed, Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical
Center following an illness at the age of 70.
He had resided in Lakeland Fl for the last 25 years with his loving wife,
Joyce Riker who passed away June 19, 2004.
Frank was born on December 16, 1939 in Corning, NY son of the late Vincent
& Gertrude Sims Riker. He married Joyce Kakritz on June 25, 1958. He was
well known in our local area as an auto mechanic, was employed by Flickengers
for over 20 years and retired from Altermans Transportation and worked
recently part time for Publix Supermarket in FL. His interests included,
woodworking, was a handyman around his home and a dedicated Jeff Gordan NASCAR
fan.
Surviving are their children, Patricia Swartwood, Beech Creek, PA; William
Scott (Rita) Riker, Lakeland, FL; Lori New, Cressent, PA; Debra (Stanley)
Sterling, Gillett, PA; thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren;
sisters, Sharon (Jim) Ameigh, Gillett PA; Kathleen Lunger, Horseheads, NY; and
Darlene Walker, Watertown NY along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Frank was predeceased by a grandson,
Michael John Riker and his in-laws, Henry & Florence White Kakritz.

beloved mother and grandmother
Age 76 of Elmira Heights, NY passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2010. Marjorie
was born February 14, 1934, the daughter of the late Stanley Robinson and Iona
Whitaker Sansky. Along with her parents she is predeceased by step-father,
George Sansky and previous husband, Philip Weigle. Marjorie was a graduate of
Thomas A. Edison and Corning Community College's clerical program. She was
employed by Capabilities Inc. as an office secretary for over 15 years and
A&P Foods prior to their closing. Marjorie is survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Cheryl & Dr. Mark Hoffman of Queensbury, NY; daughter,
Christine & Jeffrey Skinkle of Lowman, NY; son, Craig Ranck of Elmira
Heights, NY, son and daughter-in-law, Carl & Renee Weigle of Elmira
Heights, NY and eleven grandchildren: Harayl and Shira Hoffman; Josiah (Jamee),
Adam, Laura, and Jacob Skinkle; Chi Shock and Jeremia Ranck; Brian, Samuel and
Zachary Weigle and great-grandchildren, Heather, Haley, Aiden and Aaron. Also
surviving Marj are dear cousins, Leona Siskin, Marion Yusko Jack Jaquish and
friend, Shirley Burke. Marjorie will be remembered for her strength in
adversity and love of gardening, knitting, reading and researching geneology,
touring the Laurentian Mountains via bicycle with her daughter, and loving

Age 96 of Horseheads, NY passed away on June 9, 2010 at Bethany Manor.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews as well as very special friends.
In honor of her wishes, there will be no calling hours and burial will be
private and held at the convenience of the family.
Gilbert, Gloria J.
Formerly of Elmira, passed away Tuesday morning, June 8, 2010 at home in
Coryland, PA following a battle with cancer at the age of 64.
Born on June 15, 1945 in Elmira, Gloria was the daughter of the late Glenn
& Louise Cady Saxbury. She married Donald L. Gilbert on May 2, 1970 in
Elmira and he predeceased her on May 14, 2002. She was employed for many years
with the Elmira City School Dist as a custodian. Her main focus was that of
her family she cherished her grandchildren and spent countless hours with
Hunter, Alexa, Kayla, James and Levi. Gloria especially enjoyed Saturday Poker
Night with her family.

A longtime resident of the Elmira Southside community passed away Monday
morning, May 31, 2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 76.
Born on February 14, 1934 in Elkland, PA Edward was the son of the late Coley
& Elsie Perry. He married Norma Jean Spencer 47 years ago in Big Flats and
they have shared a wonderful life together. Mr. Perry was employed by Cummings
Lumber, Troy, PA for many years. An outdoorsman, Edward enjoyed hunting and
fishing.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Norma Jean Spencer Perry;
their children, Beverly Perry, Elmira; Peter (Jamie Cullen) Perry, Elmira
Heights; Donald Perry, Elmira; Edward Jr. (Dawn) Perry, Youngsville, NY; two

EVERSON, Vurla
A longtime resident of the Southport community passed away Monday evening, May
24, 2010 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility.
Born on December 2, 1918 in Pennsylvania. Vurla was the daughter of the late
William & Lucy Ingalls Kelley. She married Charles Everson on August 3,
1957 at the Elmira Wesleyan Church where they were both members. The church
remained her prime focal point for the rest of her life. Mrs. Everson played
piano for Sunday School, was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and
the church organist for over 40 years.
She attended Nyack Missionary College studying Evangelical Music. Mrs. Everson
was employed by Moore Business Forms and later Cash Electric where she was
fondly known as the "Shady Lady".
Surviving is her loving family, husband and friend of nearly 53 years, Charles
Everson; their daughter, Dorothy "Dottie" (Michael) McDermott;
grandchildren, Kelly Jo and Ryan McDermott all of Southport; nieces, nephews
and a wonderful church family. In addition to her parents, She was predeceased
by her brother, Roscoe (Esther) Kelley and sister, Neva (Earl) Ward.

Miller, Ansel E.
A longtime resident of the Pine City community passed away peacefully in the
loving care of his family and Southern Tier Hospice on Saturday afternoon, May
22, 2010 at his home at the age of 87.
Born on January 26, 1923 in Breesport, Ansel was the son of the late Samuel
& Neva Pearl Husted Miller. He served in the United States Navy during
WWII as a 3rd Class Torpedo Man. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Snyder
on September 7, 1947 at the Webb Mills United Methodist Church. Possessing a
lifelong work ethic, Ansel was employed by Sears Roebuck for eighteen years,
operated his family farm and was the proprietor of Pine City Farm Equipment
for many years. His greatest joy was being outdoors where he enjoyed his John
Deer Equipment, farming, horses and hunting.
Surviving are his loving family, wife and companion of 62 years, Elizabeth
"Betty" Snyder Miller; their children, Stephen (Linda) Miller, Troy,
PA; Randy Miller, Raeford, NC; and Nancy (James) Daum, Pine City; brothers,
Harry Miller, Horseheads and Alfred Miller, Breesport; seven grandchildren,
several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many family friends. In
addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sisters-in-law, Anna and
Kathryn Miller.

Myfelt, Marion J.
A long time resident of the Daggett, PA community passed away Monday, May 17,
2010 in Morristown, NJ where she was celebrating her son's graduation from
Drew Theological School.
Born on December 27, 1927 in Osceola, PA, Marion was the daughter of the late
Grant & Hazel Ludlum Stone. She was married to R. Ivan Myfelt on August
28, 1948 and he predeceased her on July 18, 1999. In serving the Lord, Marion
was a longtime member of the Daggett United Methodist Church. Her interests
included singing, sewing, cooking, reading and organizing church dinners and
community activities. She enjoyed nature and the outdoors, particularly bird
watching and listening to their melodies. She spent many hours watching her
favorite shows on the Hallmark channel.
Marion is survived by three loving children, daughters, Carol (Fred Toothaker)
Myfelt, Burlington, PA; Muriel Myfelt, Leesburg, VA and son, Pastor Brian
Myfelt, Grover, PA. She was predeceased by her son Neil Myfelt.

A longtime resident of 125 Lewis St. Horseheads passed away at the Arnot-Ogden
Medical Center on Monday, May 17, 2010at the age of 62.
Born on September 10, 1947 in Elmira, she was the daughter of the late Robert
& Cora Casselbury Fish. She enjoyed being a part of a large and loving
family. Her interests included shopping, jigsaw puzzles and caring for her two
parakeets, "Linus & Peanuts".
Surviving are her loving siblings and their families, Dannie & Constance
Fish, Lester Fish, Betty Hoyt, Helen Fish, Charles Fish & Linda Bennett;
sister-in-law, Pam Fish; aunt's Gertrude Hitchcock, Dalina Casselbury and
Rosie Shaffer; uncle, Francis & Dorothy Casselbury; many nieces and
nephews including her special niece, Victoria Woodlee. In addition to her
parents, Julia was also predeceased by her companion of nearly 40 years, Leon
Hills; brother, Robert Fish and brother-in-law, Robert Hoyt.

A long time resident of the Caton and Pine City communities passed away on
Monday, April 26, 2010 at the family farm she loved so very much in the care
of her loving family.
Born on February 15, 1932 in Elmira, NY, Phyllis was the daughter of the late
Cecil J. & Lola F. Chamberlain Smith.
From an early age, Phyllis learned the importance of hard work and applied it
to her families dairy farm. She married John Sterling on March 18, 1950 in the
Webb Mills Church where they have been members for many years and also active
members in the Caton United Methodist Church. In addition to being a homemaker
and working on the farm, Phyllis was also employed at the Excel dairy for 14
years and Elcor Health services for 10 years. Her interests included
collecting keepsakes, making quilts with her husband, gardening, flea markets
and being surrounded by her loving family.
Surviving is her cherished family, children, Rosanna (Earl "Boney")
Audinwood, Bruce (Gaylene Page) Sterling, Lois Jenkins, Joseph (Lisa)
Sterling, Carol (Tim) Barner and Nancy Sterling all of Caton and Pine City;

Born June 23,1917 in Coopersville, New York. She passed away April 21,2010.
She was a lady of many talents, a kind and generous heart with a will of Iron.
Her main purpose in life was family. She adored her husband, three girls and
son-in-law Angelo. She loved all her extended family and loved her bingo and
friends. She is survived by her three daughters, Laura Fusco and husband,
Angelo Fusco of Pine City, New York; Ltc. retired Gloria A Besley of Pine
City, New York; and Ella Rock of Fayetteville, North Carolina. She is also
survived by her grandchildren , Christopher Rock and Michelle Edwards, Ltc.
Jason Rock and wife Donna, and Billy Besley and wife Mary, Angela Beavers and
husband John, and Anthony Fusco and wife Gigi. She is also survived by her
great grand children, Kaileigh Rock, Colin Rock, Orrin Besley, Eric Beavers,
Kevin Beavers and Nickolas Fusco. She was predeceased by her loving husband,
Alonzo Lavalley on April 30,2006, son-in-law, Philip Rock in October 2005, Her
parents, Ephreim & Ella Fosher and six brothers and sisters, Irving Fosher,
Abram Fosher, Effie Milliken, Amos Fosher, Norma R. Coyle and Chudleigh Fosher.
She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Ina was a communicate of
St Mary's Parish in Elmira, New York. A Past member of the ladies of St. Anne
in Champlain, New York. She will be greatly missed by all those who's lives
she has touched.

Riley, Ruth M.
A longtime resident of Elmira passed away Monday afternoon, April 12, 2010 at
Elcor Health Services following an illness at the age of 84.
Born on May 1, 1925, Ruth was the daughter of the late John & Lillian
Jeffrey Page.
She was a loving wife to John Riley for 9 years until his passing in January
30, 1974.
Ruth was a member of the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church for many
years. She was employed for many years with Remington Rand and Trayer Products
Inc. She was most proud of and enjoyed her employment at the Chemung County
Jail as a Matron for nearly 10 years. Her many interests included the NY Mets,
Bingo, playing cards and bowling. Though she never raised her own children,

A long time resident of the Elmira community passed away on Monday morning,
April 5, 2010 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility.
Born on May 20, 1924 in Towanda, PA, Marion was the daughter of the late David
& Damie Bailey Johnson. She married Samuel Butts Jr. in 1946 and he passed
away in 1969. She is best remembered for the constant care and attention she
offered her family as a homemaker. In serving the Lord, Marion was a member of
the Elmira Christian Center.
Surviving are her loving children, sons, David (Connie) Butts, OK; Michael
(Mary Lou) Butts, Pine City; Samuel III (Linda) Butts, OK; Larry (Mary Lou)
Butts, NJ; daughters, Mary Louise (Sonny) Goins, AZ; Jaunita Fulmer, Elmira;
Geraldine Griswold, Elmira; Margaret Woodard, TX; and Judy Ekstrom, AZ; as
well as several grand and great grandchildren nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters,
Frances Butts, Effie Ackley, and Liza Dunamon.

Clover, Richard T.
Died suddenly on Saturday, April 3, 2010. Formerly of Knox, PA and Canonsburg,
PA, he had most recently resided in Millerton, PA. He was 56 years old. He is
the son of Ralph (deceased) and Doris Clover of Callensburg, PA. He is
survived by Ruth Clover of Pittsburgh, his former
wife and mother of his daughters, Sarah Suiter and Shannon Clover, both of
Pittsburgh. Also survived by granddaughter, Abigail Suiter. His surviving
siblings are brothers Frank Clover of Massachusetts, Terry Clover of Georgia
and Larry Clover of Georgia and his sister, Carrie (Clover) Elliton of
Delaware. His partner Sheryl Henkin-Kealey and her children Stefani and
Brendan also survive. A private viewing and memorial ceremony was held in
Elmira, NY.
DONAHUE, Patricia A.
A lifelong resident of the Elmira area passed away Thursday morning, March 25,
2010 at Elcor Health Services where she had been receiving care.
Born on November 30, 1933 in Elmira, Patricia was the daughter of the late
George & Mary Phieffer Mashanic. She married Robert Donahue on April 24,
1954 in St. Patrick's Church and he predeceased her on July 8, 1999. Patricia
was employed for many years by Moore Business Forms. She enjoyed bowling and
was a member of several local leagues. Patricia was a devoted mother and
cherished time with her family.
Surviving are her children, Robert J. Jr. (Mary) Donahue, Milwaukee, WI; Kelly
K. Donahue, Portland, OR; Daniel M. (Donna) Donahue Newfield; Krista W. (Lou)
Sauseda, Pacifica, CA; grandchildren, Breyanna, Abigail, Peter, Branigan with
wife, Taryn, Jeff and Jordan; brothers, George (Barbara) Mashanic Elmira

HOLLY, CARL RAYMOND
Died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at the age of 90, in the comfort of his home.
He was born February 17, 1920 in Wesleyville, Pennsylvania, to George Oscar
and Jessie Lodema Brassington Holly. He was predeceased by his parents, 5
siblings & infant son, Ronald Carl Holly. He was drafted and was in the
Army serving in various locations, his favorite being the Philipines. He
worked at Remington Rand for 32 years and 12 years at Hardinge Brothers. After
his retirement in 1985, he volunteered for RSVP. He married Marie Ellen Dean
62 years ago on July 12, 1947, in Elmira, NY. Besides his wife, he is also
survived by his children: Douglas of Phoenix, AZ (wife Cynthia with their
children Cara, Mary, Ruth & John), Dennis of Hoboken, NJ. Caryl Cammer
{Larry McCormick} of Elmira, NY(her daughter Karen {Christopher} Cammer
Whiting and their son, Eliot Michael), David of Ontario, NY (wife Kathy and
their children, Thomas & Elizabeth), Donald of Chicago, Il (wife Phyllis,
children Donald, Frankie & Meghan) and Linda M. Holly of Pine City,
NY(daughters Jenn {Brad} Schuck Park with their daughter Holly Marie, as well
as her sibling, his 3rd great-grandchild, due October 10, 2010, & Lindsay
Holly-Lewis {Jimmy Golden}). He is also survived by 3 siblings, nieces &
nephews. He leaves behind his faithful canine companions, Bruiser and Evan. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, horseshoes & having his own garden. He
deeply missed his fishing buddy, Don Hartman after his passing. The family
wishes to thank Jimmy Golden for his time and loving companionship he gave to
Carl, his VA nurse Carrie for her loving care and Jim Caywood for his warm and
wonderful understanding and his guidance at this difficult time. It was Carl
and Marie's wish that there be no public services. He was buried near his son,
Ronnie, in Woodlawn Cemetery after receiving a brief Honor Guard service. The
family will hold a memorial service on Saturday, May 29, 2010 from 1PM-4PM at
Trinity Episcopal Church in Elmira. Anyone wishing to remember Carl, may make

Norton, Wayne K. Sr.
A longtime resident of the Ridgebury Township community passed away suddenly
on Sunday March 7, 2010 at the Robert Packer Hospital at the age of 71.
Born on July 11, 1938 in Wheelersville, PA Wayne was the son of the late Ward
& Blanch Belles Norton. He was employed by the Robert Packer Hospital for
many years where he worked in the maintenance department. Wayne enjoyed time
spent at home with his family and hunting the land that surrounds. He is
survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Cora Green Norton; children,
Donna (Warren) Brady, Delaware; Wayne Ken (Patricia) Norton, Milan, PA;
sister, Carol "Dorothy" Talada; brothers, Edward (Connie) Norton and
Perry Norton; sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Betty Norton; seven grandchildren,
nineteen great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents,
Wayne was also predeceased by his brothers, Leo and John Norton.

Passed away at St. Joseph's Apartments where she had been residing on Saturday
February 27, 2010 very unexpectedly.
Born on May 19, 1937 in Avoca, NY, Edna was the daughter of the late John Earl
Calkins & Esther G. Bennett Brush. She was married to Charles Victor
Bailey in 1955 and he predeceased her in 1982. Edna was employed for over 20
years at the Red Jacket Restaurant. Dedicated to her loving family she enjoyed
being a mother to her six children, Elaine (Jeffrey) Schmoel, John (Julie)
Bailey, Earl (Rhonda) Bailey, Michael (Charlene) Bailey, Victoria (Bill)
Covert and her beloved Karen Keck who predeceased her. Also surviving is her
sister, Onalee Clark; daughter -in-law, Mary Ann Bailey; sons-in-law, Bob Keck
and Karl Harbot; along with grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces,
nephews and family friends.

A longtime resident of the Elmira Heights community passed away Saturday,
February 27, 2010.
Born on April 10, 1918 in Elmira, She was the daughter of the late Frederick
A. & Mary Frances Collins Stutske. Mary graduated from Elmira Free Academy
and received a degree from Elmira Business Institute. She Was employed briefly
at American Bridge in Elmira Heights where she would meet her future husband,
Harold "Pete" S. Millham and they were married on February 8, 1941;
he predeceased her on October 3, 1996. Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She
was active in Elmira Heights Women's Rotary, the PTA and Girl Scouts. In later
years she was employed by Charles Albert's Jewelry Store and Jerome's Clothing
Store. She was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church for over 50 years.
Surviving is her loving daughter and son-in-law, Anne (R. Smith) Clifton,
Albuquerque, NM and grandson, Adam Clifton. In addition to her beloved family.
Mary leaves behind wonderful and cherished friends who made her final days so

LYON, Barbara Susan Egan
Born on April 17, 1920 , passed away peacefully, Wednesday February 24, 2010
at St. Joseph's Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility where she received the best
care possible. Early years she spent in Wisconsin while spending summertime at
local Fountain Bleau, the families summer home. She Married Garnet Rexford
Lyon on February 2, 1942. Barbara earned her LPN as a student at Arnot-Ogden
and worked for Doctor's Kaplan, Persuad and many others until retiring in
1975. Barbara volunteered for the Arnot-Ogden Hospital for many years. In
recent years she was an avid supporter of the restoration efforts at Eldridge
Park donating hundreds of hours of her time. Barbara passed away while sharing
her room with her husband of 68 years. She was a wonderful mother, nurse and
friend to all. Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Garnet R. Lyon;
children, Ronda Jean Allen, Jon Garnet Lyon, Nancy Ann Mitchell and Dr. Robert
Lyon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Eldridge

Our Heavenly Father wrapped his arms around Blanche at her home surrounded
by the care of her loving family on Thursday, February 18, 2010.
She was born October 27, 1931, in Binghamton, NY to the late Erwin and Irene
Cashman. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son in law, Renee &
Ron Unwin, Elmira; her, grandson, Aaron LaGier, Elmira; and her
great-grandchildren, Zachary, Connor and Julian. She is also survived by her
sisters, Phyllis Judge, Rochester; Donna Bartow, NC; and sisters and brothers
in-law, Grace & Tom Creagh, Nora & Bob Smith, both of Binghamton; as
well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son, Robert E.
LaGier (2004), and brothers Erwin Jr. and Bert Cashman. She was met at the
gates of heaven by her nephew, Ed Creagh who also went to be with our Lord on
February 16, 2010. She was also predeceased by the love of her life, Chet
Kowalski (1996), who is dancing with her in Heaven right now.
Blanche graduated from Binghamton North High School and Corning Community
College with honors. She was a 30 year employee and retiree of Westinghouse.
She was a longtime and active member of the Pennsylvania Avenue United
Methodist Church, faithfully participating in the Thursday Women's Bible study
group. She was a member of the Elmira Heights American Legion Post 154, Polish
Arts Club, the Soaring Polka Association and the White Eagles Club.
She was an avid competitive golfer with a hole in one and member of the Willow
Creek Golf Course. She also enjoyed bowling, roller skating, gardening,
sewing, and anything else that had to do with working with her hands.
She will be missed by her many, many, many friends and her faithful companion
Miss Bonnie Belle.

27, 2010 at the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. with her
pastor and friend, the Reverend William Vallet and the Asst. Pastor at the
Bible Speaks Church and longtime friend, Jim Kellogg officiating. Graveside
services will take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the springtime.

KANE, Hugh Carlton
"Carlie"
A longtime and well known resident of the Fassett and Gillett, PA communities
passed away Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Sylvan Ridge Personal Care Home,
Columbia Cross Roads, where he had been receiving care at the age of 92.
Born on September 2, 1917 in Erie, PA, Carlie was the son of Reverend J.
Sydney & Nevah Holcomb Kane. With a high regard for education, Hugh
received his B.A. from Adrian College, MI with a degree in Education and
received his M.S. from the University of Southern California. He received his
Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Sarasota. After living and
teaching in California, he educated students at Horseheads, New York School
District from 1953-1968. There he worked with elementary students and junior
high special education students. Dr. Kane was an Associate Professor of
Education and Supervisor of Student Teachers at Mansfield University from
1968-1970. He also was a Clinical Associate Psychologist for the New York
State Department of Mental Hygiene at the Elmira Reception Center. Throughout
his career he was well respected by his colleagues and students. He owned and
operated Northend Garage, Laundromat, and Car Wash. He was a member of the
Masonic Trojan Lodge # 306, the Elmira Heights American Legion, and the
Fassett Grange.
Dedicated to his country, Carlie served in the United States Navy during WWII
in the South Pacific on LST 449. His loving wife of 40 years, Edith Congdon
Kane, predeceased him in 1990. In serving the Lord, Carlie was a member of the
Fassett Baptist Church where he would often share his musical gift of playing
the violin for services. His passions included traveling with his wife Edith,
writing poetry, playing music, visiting friends and relatives, attending Navy
conventions, and collecting classic cars.
He is survived by his loving family, twin daughters, Collette (Marvin) Roberts
and Colleen Kane, Gillett, PA; grandson, Timothy Roberts; brother, Reverend J.
Sydney Kane Jr., Lansdale, PA; nephew, Houghton (Nancy) Kane, Lansdale, PA;
niece, Margaret (Dennis) Roberts, Fort Wayne, IN; step-sons, Thomas
(Jeannette) Congdon, Pine City and family, Lisa (James) Epp and Scott Congdon;
and Lynn (Barbara) Congdon, Gillett, PA and family, Tanya (David) Decker,
Barbara Lynn (Chris) Valero, and Shaun (Rebecca) Congdon. In addition to his
parents and wife, Carlie was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Elise Kane.

Formerly of 278 Curtis St. Southport, and presently residing at the Bethany
Manor, passed away, Saturday morning, February 20, 2010 at the Arnot-Ogden
Medical Center following an illness.
Margaret was born on June 29, 1950 in Elmira, daughter of the late Maurice
& Gladys Christian McGrain. She was married to Ronald A. Pond in 1970 and
he predeceased her last year. Margaret was a homemaker who enjoyed crafts,
caring for her home, her pets and most recently treasured the friendships she
made while residing at the Manor. She was a longtime member of the Elmira
Wesleyan Church. Surviving is her brothers-in-law, Donald (Grace) Pond,
Athens, PA; George (Louise) Pond, Waverly; Robert (Marion) Pond, Sayre, PA;
brothers, Richard and Maurice McGrain, CA and their families; along with many

WANDELL, LaVerne G.
A longtime resident of the West Elmira community, passed away on Friday,
February 12, 2010 in the comfort of his home in the care of his family at the
age of 85.
Born on August 17, 1924 in Elmira, LaVerne was the son of the late, Wilbert C.
& Jesse Mace Wandell. Dedicated to his country he proudly served in the
United States Army during WWII. Following the war, LaVerne married Katherine
Butts on June 10, 1946 in Elmira. A hard worker and good provider, LaVerne was
employed by Swift Meat Co. and Hardinge Inc. for many years. In serving the
Lord, he was a member of the Westside United Methodist Church and a member of
the Elmira Heights Masonic Lodge. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling.
LaVerne cherished his family who survive, wife of nearly 64 years, Katherine
Butts Wandell; daughter, Mary K. (Michael R.) Boorum, Niagara Falls; son,
Verne R. (Lorrie) Wandell, MI; sister, Florence Rose, Horseheads; five
grandchildren, Michael (Casey) Boorum, Michelle (Kirt) Bordonaro, Melaine
(Zachary) Herr, all of the Niagara Falls area; Elizabeth (Alex) Witt, MI; and
Lauren Wandell, CA; five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and family
friends.
In addition to his parents, Wilbert C. & Jesse Mace Wandell, LaVerne was
also predeceased by his siblings, Neva, Charles, Woodrow and John.

OBERG, Albert E.
91, of Horseheads, passed away peacefully February 10, 2010 in his home,
surrounded by family, and in the arms of his loving wife and soulmate of 61
years, Mildred. He braved a six month battle with pancreatic cancer just as he
did everything else in his life - with grace, strength, and a sense of humor.
Albert was born to Ragnhild and Carl Gustav Albert Oberg on July 28, 1918 in
Proctor, Vermont. Albert's mother Ragnhild died in the flu epidemic of 1918.
He was subsequently raised by his adoptive parents, Marcus and Amanda Ling.
Albert attended high school in Rutland, VT where he was active in sports and
theater. After high school Albert worked in Rutland. He enlisted in the U.S.
Navy in 1940, serving throughout World War II. He survived the 1942 sinking of
the USS Jacob Jones. (Thanks to the efforts of the Elmira Office of the
Department of Veterans Affairs, he was unexpectedly honored with the Purple
Heart in a beautiful 2009 Veterans Day ceremony in Elmira.) After recovering
from his wounds, he spent four additional years in the Pacific theater. He
returned to Vermont where he met Mildred Lampman on a blind date; they married
two years later. Albert graduated in 1951from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, Troy NY, with a BS in Physics. He worked for Westinghouse in
Horseheads where he was awarded 7 patents as an electronics engineer from 1952
until his retirement in 1981. He and Mildred lived in Elmira Heights until
1963, following which they enjoyed many happy years at their home in rural
Veteran township; property he often referred to as being like heaven.
Albert and Mildred raised 4 sons, and enjoyed many wonderful years with their
extended family.
Albert is pre-deceased by his parents; Carl Gustav Albert Oberg and Ragnhild
(Peterson); his adoptive parents Marcus and Amanda Ling; brother-in-law Paul
McMahon and granddaughter Katie. He is survived by his wife Mildred; his
sister Laurel McMahon of VT; sister-in-law Frances Lampman of VT; sons, Keith
(Roxie) Oberg of PA, Eric (Judy) Oberg of VT, Don (Ilka) Oberg of NC; Glenn
(Faith) Oberg of KY grandsons Michael (Lauren) Oberg of GA; Dylan Mendelson of
NY; Gregory (Lisa) Oberg of NY; Matthew Oberg of PA ; granddaughters: Pauline
(Lance) Kilmer of NY; Darcy (Ludovic) Buret of VT; Rebecca (Jeffrey) Smith of
NY; great grandsons Alex and Brendon, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews,
and many dear neighbors and friends.
Albert was a loving man, and possessed an inquisitive intellect, deep
appreciation for music, nature, travel, art, philosophy, square dancing, and
life in general. He often noted that love was the most important thing of all.
He will be very much missed by all who knew and loved him.

A proud and gracious lady who was respected and loved by her family, passed on
Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center. She had resided
at Bethany Village and previously lived in Ocala, FL.
Born on September 26, 1926 in Gillett, PA, Doris was the daughter of the late
William & Rosamond Updike Holton. She was a graduate of Troy High School.
Doris was employed by Iszards and Lodge on the Green for many years. She
enjoyed golf, travel, and caring for her canine companions.

Called home by God Thursday January 21, 2010 surrounded by her loving family.
She is predeceased by her loving parents, Leo & Bette (Rohde) Garelle;
grandmother, Adele Rohde (her adored Mine); beloved life companion, Derek
Clarke; brother, Bernard (Bernie) Garelle; and nephew, Jamie DeRico.
She is survived by her children, sons, Michael Nelan (Nicola Donohoe); David
Nelan (Jennie Daugherty); and daughter, Monica Garelle; brother, Leo Garelle
Jr.; sister, Rita Ann Garelle; grandchildren, Kerrick Duchy, Justin Nelan,
Brandon and Amanda Couse, Madalenn, Lidia, Dominick and Nathan Nelan. Lifelong
best friend, Michelle (Shelly) Lepere; special friends, Jimmy DeRico,
Christine Couse, and Marie Duchy. Along with many other friends, cousins,
nieces and nephews.
"Catherine was a unique character and a very special woman. Her inner
strength and fortitude, generous spirit, vibrant personality, quick wit, good
humor and beautiful smile touched all that were privileged to know her.

SCHNAUTZ, Earl E.
A longtime resident of the Southport community passed away at his Cedar St.
home on Friday afternoon, January 22, 2010 with his loving family at his side
at the age of 77.
Born on August 25, 1932 in Elmira, Earl was the son of the late, Elmer &
Freida Schwab Schnautz. He married Anna Parfitt on January 3, 1954 in
Centenary United Methodist Church. Earl was well known in the Southport
community having operated E & O Ford Sales / Southern Tier Heating for
over 50 years and was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Anna Parfitt Schnautz,
Southport; son, Earl (Debbie Lackey) Schnautz; grandchildren, Brittany
Schnautz, Rochester and Katie Schnautz, Elmira; sister, Barbara Schnautz,
Elmira; brother, Carl (Sally) Schnautz, Horseheads; nieces and nephews. In
addition to his parents, Earl was predeceased by his daughter, Melinda
"Moe" Carpenter on March 30, 2008.
In honoring his wishes there will be no public services. Memorials in his
memory may be directed to Southern Tier Hospice for the wonderful care they
gave Earl through his long illness and final days at home.
OSGOOD, Bryan H.
"Flyin Bryan # 09"
Bryan, a longtime resident of the Elmira area passed away Saturday, December
19, 2009 at his home with his loving family by his side after a brave nine
month battle with an illness.
Bryan was a business man, "Osgood Motor Co." for many years. He was
a well known accomplished race car driver throughout New York State and
Pennsylvania, winning the first two races at Pocono Race Track in
Pennsylvania. He began dirt track racing at Bodines Race Track in Chemung and
went on to Sprints and NASCAR. Bryan was born December 10, 1932 in
Lawrenceville, PA to Erwin & Charlotte Osgood, now deceased. He was the
third born of seven children; brothers, Elwin, Laverne, Nyle, Clair, sister
Margery, all deceased.
Still living is beloved brother, Keith Osgood and wife, Linda, Erin; Also
deceased is beloved daughter-in-law, Debi Osgood.
Surviving Bryan is his loving wife and companion, Dolores Fives Osgood and six
children, David Osgood and fiancée, Kristie Griffin, Elmira; Gary Osgood and
wife, Lois, Elmira; Pam and husband Charles Werz, Daytona Beach, FL; Kelly
Osgood Martin and fiancée, Chris Larsen, Deltona, FL; Lynn Robertson and
husband, James, Sterling, VA; Faith Osgood and fiancée, Billy Leszewski,

"Nana"
Passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at
the age of 69.
A beloved daughter of the late, Eldon & Katherine Owen Williamson. She was
married to Kenneth Strock who also predeceased her.
Surviving is her loving family, three brothers, Robert Owen Williamson;
Russell (Jean) Williamson; John Roger Williamson; two sisters, Donna Rae (Les)
Wilbur and Kathleen Marie Williamson; also surviving is Michael Hill whom she
loved as her own son. She was loving called Nana by her many nieces and
nephews. Laura worked many years in the food industry. She was well known
having worked at Patsy's Lunch and Anne's Pancakes. Laura was employed at the
Arnot-Ogden Medical center for over 17 years in the Dietary Department
In serving the Lord, she was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for
many years and developed many close friendships. Laura appreciated those
friends during her illness. An animal lover, Laura adored "Bambi"
and "Zoee". She enjoyed traveling and saw many parts of the America.
While at home, she enjoyed crocheting and time spent with loved ones.

Passed away on Wednesday evening, December 30, 2009 at her Herrick St. home
with her loving family by her side at the age of 78.
Born on March 11, 1931 in Elmira, Mary Lou was the daughter of the late
William P. & Marie Shea. She married James J. Dolan on May 21, 1949 at St.
Mary's Church and he predeceased her on April 4, 2007 following 57 years of
marriage.

St. Mary's Church. She spent many hours enjoying needlepoint, knitting and
sewing. She was employed by Mustico's Restaurant and St. Joseph's Hospital but
her greatest passion was that of a homemaker, caring for her home and
cherished family. She especially enjoyed traveling to Cape Cod sitting and
listening to the ocean.

SCHIAVE, Frank G.
1250 Maple Avenue, Elmira, well-known resident of Chemung County, went to
" relieve the watch on the signal bridge" Wednesday morning,
December 23, 2009, at age 94. Born in New York, NY, Frank was the son of
Marion L. and Josephine Vergallito Schiave. Frank and Lura Louise Derbyshire
of Elmira were married August 12, 1939, recently celebrating their 70th
wedding anniversary. After graduating from Southside High School, Elmira, in
1932, Frank served for several years in the United States Navy. At the
outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and
distinguished himself serving on Navy vessels as a Signalman on the staff of
the Commandant of Trans. Div. Eight of the Pacific Fleet. He was proud to have
participated in the first landings at Guadalcanal. He was awarded a
Presidential Commission in 1943, one of thirteen men to be so honored. He was
employed by LeValley, McLeod, Kinkaid for a quarter of a century, followed by
several years as a buyer at C.R. Evans Co. and at Kimble Contracting. Frank
was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Elmira Masonic Lodge 95,
Guadalcanal Veterans Association, Veterans' History Project, local historical
societies, and active in ships' reunions for many years. Surviving are his
wife, Louise, daughters, Marjorie L. (Peter J.) Lucarelli, Leesburg, Fl; and
Barbara J. (Calvin R.) Gillette, Elmira; grandchildren, Caryl N. (Randy S.
Denierio) Lucarelli, Patrick J. (Christine A.) Lucarelli, Suzanne E. (John K.)
Knighton, William M. (Hether A.) Gillette; great-grandchildren, Nicole and
Gregory Barron, Marley Denierio, Corey and Laura Knighton, Adam, Abbie and

A lifelong resident of Elmira, passed away on Monday afternoon, December 7,
2009 at his Pennsylvania Ave. home with his loving family at his side at the
age of 71.
Born on April 5, 1938, Wade was the son of the late Marvin Hill & Mildred
Hill Roberts. He retired from J.F. & J.P. Wenzel Contractors Inc. Wade
loved his family very much. He also loved animals, especially,
"Clancy" who was his constant canine companion.
Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley Hubbard Hill; daughters,
Melissa (Bob) Ostrander, Julie (Ed) Walton, Felicia (Brian) Barr and Kristie
(Jason) Baldwin; grandchildren, Mathew, Robert (Nikki), Casey, Nikki (Scott),
Jason, Courtney, Mitchell, Angela, Brian, Kayla, Jaymie, Alyssa, Alexis and

Formerly of Pauline Ave. Pine City, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009
Born on August 9, 1930 in Schenectady, NY. He is the son of the late Ernest L.
& Hazel Reed Knapp. He was employed at American LaFrance for 37 years and
then by ABB Traction. He enjoyed resorting his 1928 Model T Ford. He was a
talented carpenter and built his home. Ed was a devoted and loving husband,
father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ed is predeceased by his wife,
Dorothy A. Knapp; first wife, Anna L. Knapp Taylor; daughter, Deborah
Golightly; two sisters and ten brothers.
Ed is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Allen W.) Sick, FL; Mary (Bob)
Austin, RI; Lora (John) Roupp, Elmira Heights; Michelle (Joe) McGovern, RI;
and son, Laverne E. Knapp II and his fiancé, Yvonne Palmer, Lowman; brother,

"Bill"
A longtime resident of the Fassett, PA community passed away on Tuesday
morning, December 1, 2009 at the age of 80.
Born on February 22, 1929 in Nantyglo, PA Bill was the son of the late William
Sr. & Ada Kempfer Beechey. In service to his country, Bill served in the
United States Navy from 1948-1952. He married the love of his life, Donna
Greenough on July 4, 1952 in Elmira. Mr. Beechey was employed by Westinghouse
for over 37 years until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of Fassett
Baptist Church and was very active with youth where he coached the church's
softball team. An avid outdoorsman, Bill was a member of the South Creek Rod
and Gun Club and loved fishing and hunting. He held a passion for photography
and was well known by his readers as the Bradford County correspondent for the
Star Gazette.
Surviving is his beloved family, wife and companion, Donna Greenough Beechey,
formerly of Fassett, and presently of Sayre, PA; their children, Danielle
(Wayne) Tice, Gillett, PA; Rod (Beth) Beechey, Midlothian, TX; seven
grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Rose, Nathan (Cynthia) Beechey, Ryan Beechey,
Justin (Adri) Beechey, Matthew Beechey, Adam (Keiko) Tice and Ashley
"Ash" (Lindsey Groom) Tice; three great grandchildren, Noah Beechey,

Caywood, Arthur L.
A longtime resident of South Broadway, Wellsburg, NY went home to be with the
Lord on Monday morning, May 22, 2006 peacefully in the home he built fifty six
years ago within the care of his family, wonderful friends and Southern Tier
Hospice at the age of 86. Art was born in Elmira on March 14, 1920, son of
Hazel MacDougal Caywood. He learned at an early age the importance of hard
work as he left school to help support his mother and siblings. He worked on a
farm in Himrod through his teen years. Art married Alice Montene Holland on
August 30, 1941 in Harrison Valley, PA. In honor of his brother, James E.
Caywood who was killed in Italy during WWII, Arthur joined the United States
Navy. While in service, his ship came under enemy fire and several of his
comrades lost their lives. Following the war, he returned home to raise a
family. A skilled carpenter, he built several homes in the area. He was well
known within his trade as a Tool & Die Maker. A quiet unassuming
gentlemen, Art found enjoyment in family outings, traveling to Virginia,
dining out, quiet afternoons at the lake and most especially a long day of
golf with his buddies at the Mark Twain Golf Course. He was proud of his
family and always encouraged us to do better. His hard work and sacrifices
made it possible for his family to have an easier life than he had growing up.
Surviving is his loving family, including his wife of 65 years, Alice Montene
Holland Caywood; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannette & Thomas Congdon,
Pine City; Sheila & Bo Jennings Fink, Strausburg, VA; a son, James Caywood,
Southport; four grandchildren, Rebecca & Dave Davis, Lisa & James Epp,
Scott Congdon, and Michael Fink; seven great grandchildren, Ashton Davis,
Rachel, Stephen, Daniel, Nathan and Elizabeth Epp and Brooke Congdon Binford;
a sister, Mary Caywood Rice, Elmira Heights; sisters-in-law, Betty Morgan,
Millport and Edna Mascho, Horseheads; several nieces, nephews and his church
family at Fassett Baptist, along with many cherished family friends and the
companion he had made in his little dog "Corky".
In addition to his mother, Hazel, and his brother, James, Art was also
predeceased by his brother, Harold Morgan, and his sister, Joyce Fielder.

Bennett, Helen
A long time resident of the Southport community was reunited with her beloved
Richard following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, January 13,
2005 peacefully in their home.
Helen was a Private Duty Nurse and cared for many area families during an
illness or through their elderly years. Some of her patients she served for
many years. In later years she brought comfort to countless families in her
service to Caywood's. She made families feel at home and assured each one
their needs would be cared for, and did it with the outmost grace, style and
class.
Helen's many interest included dinning out at her favorite local restaurants,
walking countless miles in her community, making sure her friends never did
with out, and spending time with the love of her life, Richard Bennett until
his passing in 1994.
Helen is survived be a community of close friends who cherished having her in
our lives. We love you Helen and will never forget the imprint you have left
on our hearts. |
