Called home by God Thursday January 21, 2010 surrounded by her loving family.
She is predeceased by her loving parents, Leo & Bette (Rohde) Garelle;
grandmother, Adele Rohde (her adored Mine); beloved life companion, Derek
Clarke; brother, Bernard (Bernie) Garelle; and nephew, Jamie DeRico.
She is survived by her children, sons, Michael Nelan (Nicola Donohoe); David
Nelan (Jennie Daugherty); and daughter, Monica Garelle; brother, Leo Garelle
Jr.; sister, Rita Ann Garelle; grandchildren, Kerrick Duchy, Justin Nelan,
Brandon and Amanda Couse, Madalenn, Lidia, Dominick and Nathan Nelan. Lifelong
best friend, Michelle (Shelly) Lepere; special friends, Jimmy DeRico,
Christine Couse, and Marie Duchy. Along with many other friends, cousins,
nieces and nephews.
"Catherine was a unique character and a very special woman. Her inner
strength and fortitude, generous spirit, vibrant personality, quick wit, good
humor and beautiful smile touched all that were privileged to know her.
Although, she will be sorely missed by those who remain behind, we shall
rejoice in our countless precious memories of her."

SCHNAUTZ, Earl E.
A longtime resident of the Southport community passed away at his Cedar St.
home on Friday afternoon, January 22, 2010 with his loving family at his side
at the age of 77.
Born on August 25, 1932 in Elmira, Earl was the son of the late, Elmer &
Freida Schwab Schnautz. He married Anna Parfitt on January 3, 1954 in
Centenary United Methodist Church. Earl was well known in the Southport
community having operated E & O Ford Sales / Southern Tier Heating for
over 50 years and was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Anna Parfitt Schnautz,
Southport; son, Earl (Debbie Lackey) Schnautz; grandchildren, Brittany
Schnautz, Rochester and Katie Schnautz, Elmira; sister, Barbara Schnautz,
Elmira; brother, Carl (Sally) Schnautz, Horseheads; nieces and nephews. In
addition to his parents, Earl was predeceased by his daughter, Melinda
"Moe" Carpenter on March 30, 2008.
In honoring his wishes there will be no public services. Memorials in his
memory may be directed to Southern Tier Hospice for the wonderful care they
gave Earl through his long illness and final days at home.
OSGOOD, Bryan H.
"Flyin Bryan # 09"
Bryan, a longtime resident of the Elmira area passed away Saturday, December
19, 2009 at his home with his loving family by his side after a brave nine
month battle with an illness.
Bryan was a business man, "Osgood Motor Co." for many years. He was
a well known accomplished race car driver throughout New York State and
Pennsylvania, winning the first two races at Pocono Race Track in
Pennsylvania. He began dirt track racing at Bodines Race Track in Chemung and
went on to Sprints and NASCAR. Bryan was born December 10, 1932 in
Lawrenceville, PA to Erwin & Charlotte Osgood, now deceased. He was the
third born of seven children; brothers, Elwin, Laverne, Nyle, Clair, sister
Margery, all deceased.
Still living is beloved brother, Keith Osgood and wife, Linda, Erin; Also
deceased is beloved daughter-in-law, Debi Osgood.
Surviving Bryan is his loving wife and companion, Dolores Fives Osgood and six
children, David Osgood and fiancée, Kristie Griffin, Elmira; Gary Osgood and
wife, Lois, Elmira; Pam and husband Charles Werz, Daytona Beach, FL; Kelly
Osgood Martin and fiancée, Chris Larsen, Deltona, FL; Lynn Robertson and
husband, James, Sterling, VA; Faith Osgood and fiancée, Billy Leszewski,
Daytona Beach, FL; eight grandchildren, David, Bobby, Rachel, Casey, Daylene,

STROCK, Laura Ann Williamson
"Nana"
Passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at
the age of 69.
A beloved daughter of the late, Eldon & Katherine Owen Williamson. She was
married to Kenneth Strock who also predeceased her.
Surviving is her loving family, three brothers, Robert Owen Williamson;
Russell (Jean) Williamson; John Roger Williamson; two sisters, Donna Rae (Les)
Wilbur and Kathleen Marie Williamson; also surviving is Michael Hill whom she
loved as her own son. She was loving called Nana by her many nieces and
nephews. Laura worked many years in the food industry. She was well known
having worked at Patsy's Lunch and Anne's Pancakes. Laura was employed at the
Arnot-Ogden Medical center for over 17 years in the Dietary Department
In serving the Lord, she was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for
many years and developed many close friendships. Laura appreciated those
friends during her illness. An animal lover, Laura adored "Bambi"
and "Zoee". She enjoyed traveling and saw many parts of the America.
While at home, she enjoyed crocheting and time spent with loved ones.

Dolan, Mary Lou
Passed away on Wednesday evening, December 30, 2009 at her Herrick St. home
with her loving family by her side at the age of 78.
Born on March 11, 1931 in Elmira, Mary Lou was the daughter of the late
William P. & Marie Shea. She married James J. Dolan on May 21, 1949 at St.
Mary's Church and he predeceased her on April 4, 2007 following 57 years of
marriage.
Surviving are her eight children, Nancy (Paul) Huonker, Apalachin; Paula
(David) Cook, Pine City; James (Sue) Dolan, Harwich, MA; William (Linda)
Dolan, Southport; Christopher (Sandra Kershner) Dolan, Corning; Betty (Gary)
Allington, Pine City; Michael (Barbara) Dolan, Buffalo; Michele (Steven) Loud,
Millerton, PA; sister-in-law, Helen Ryan, Albany, NY; fifteen grandchildren,
Lynn Huonker, Carrie (Kyle) Krawczyk, PJ (Kristen Burbidge) Huonker, Angie
(Drew) Wright, Steve Dolan, Steve (Kelly) Cook, Phil (Michelle) Cook, Ashley
Loud, Shawn Loud, Maggie Dolan, Sarah Dolan, Becky Dolan, Jessica (Brian)

predeceased by her granddaughter, Kelli Huonker. Mary Lou was a communicant of
St. Mary's Church. She spent many hours enjoying needlepoint, knitting and
sewing. She was employed by Mustico's Restaurant and St. Joseph's Hospital but
her greatest passion was that of a homemaker, caring for her home and
cherished family. She especially enjoyed traveling to Cape Cod sitting and
listening to the ocean.

SCHIAVE, Frank G.
1250 Maple Avenue, Elmira, well-known resident of Chemung County, went to
" relieve the watch on the signal bridge" Wednesday morning,
December 23, 2009, at age 94. Born in New York, NY, Frank was the son of
Marion L. and Josephine Vergallito Schiave. Frank and Lura Louise Derbyshire
of Elmira were married August 12, 1939, recently celebrating their 70th
wedding anniversary. After graduating from Southside High School, Elmira, in
1932, Frank served for several years in the United States Navy. At the
outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and
distinguished himself serving on Navy vessels as a Signalman on the staff of
the Commandant of Trans. Div. Eight of the Pacific Fleet. He was proud to have
participated in the first landings at Guadalcanal. He was awarded a
Presidential Commission in 1943, one of thirteen men to be so honored. He was
employed by LeValley, McLeod, Kinkaid for a quarter of a century, followed by
several years as a buyer at C.R. Evans Co. and at Kimble Contracting. Frank
was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Elmira Masonic Lodge 95,
Guadalcanal Veterans Association, Veterans' History Project, local historical
societies, and active in ships' reunions for many years. Surviving are his
wife, Louise, daughters, Marjorie L. (Peter J.) Lucarelli, Leesburg, Fl; and
Barbara J. (Calvin R.) Gillette, Elmira; grandchildren, Caryl N. (Randy S.
Denierio) Lucarelli, Patrick J. (Christine A.) Lucarelli, Suzanne E. (John K.)
Knighton, William M. (Hether A.) Gillette; great-grandchildren, Nicole and
Gregory Barron, Marley Denierio, Corey and Laura Knighton, Adam, Abbie and

A lifelong resident of Elmira, passed away on Monday afternoon, December 7,
2009 at his Pennsylvania Ave. home with his loving family at his side at the
age of 71.
Born on April 5, 1938, Wade was the son of the late Marvin Hill & Mildred
Hill Roberts. He retired from J.F. & J.P. Wenzel Contractors Inc. Wade
loved his family very much. He also loved animals, especially,
"Clancy" who was his constant canine companion.
Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley Hubbard Hill; daughters,
Melissa (Bob) Ostrander, Julie (Ed) Walton, Felicia (Brian) Barr and Kristie
(Jason) Baldwin; grandchildren, Mathew, Robert (Nikki), Casey, Nikki (Scott),
Jason, Courtney, Mitchell, Angela, Brian, Kayla, Jaymie, Alyssa, Alexis and
Jaylin; great grandchildren, Zachary, Lenny Ray, Caleb and Kole; sisters,

Formerly of Pauline Ave. Pine City, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009
Born on August 9, 1930 in Schenectady, NY. He is the son of the late Ernest L.
& Hazel Reed Knapp. He was employed at American LaFrance for 37 years and
then by ABB Traction. He enjoyed resorting his 1928 Model T Ford. He was a
talented carpenter and built his home. Ed was a devoted and loving husband,
father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ed is predeceased by his wife,
Dorothy A. Knapp; first wife, Anna L. Knapp Taylor; daughter, Deborah
Golightly; two sisters and ten brothers.
Ed is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Allen W.) Sick, FL; Mary (Bob)
Austin, RI; Lora (John) Roupp, Elmira Heights; Michelle (Joe) McGovern, RI;
and son, Laverne E. Knapp II and his fiancé, Yvonne Palmer, Lowman; brother,

BEECHEY, William Kempfer
"Bill"
A longtime resident of the Fassett, PA community passed away on Tuesday
morning, December 1, 2009 at the age of 80.
Born on February 22, 1929 in Nantyglo, PA Bill was the son of the late William
Sr. & Ada Kempfer Beechey. In service to his country, Bill served in the
United States Navy from 1948-1952. He married the love of his life, Donna
Greenough on July 4, 1952 in Elmira. Mr. Beechey was employed by Westinghouse
for over 37 years until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of Fassett
Baptist Church and was very active with youth where he coached the church's
softball team. An avid outdoorsman, Bill was a member of the South Creek Rod
and Gun Club and loved fishing and hunting. He held a passion for photography
and was well known by his readers as the Bradford County correspondent for the
Star Gazette.
Surviving is his beloved family, wife and companion, Donna Greenough Beechey,
formerly of Fassett, and presently of Sayre, PA; their children, Danielle
(Wayne) Tice, Gillett, PA; Rod (Beth) Beechey, Midlothian, TX; seven
grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Rose, Nathan (Cynthia) Beechey, Ryan Beechey,
Justin (Adri) Beechey, Matthew Beechey, Adam (Keiko) Tice and Ashley

Formerly of Pauline Ave. Pine City passed away Monday November 30, 2009 with
her loving family at her side.
Born on September 2, 1925 in Sylvania, PA, Dorothy was the daughter of the
late George & Allene Bailey Keyes. Surviving are her loving children,
Georgia & Gary Welch Tuttle, Burdett, NY; Robert & Patricia Roe,
Horseheads; Nancy Beaucage, Florida; Larry James & Sharon Roe, Florida;
Barbara & John Burns, Elmira; Pam & Scott Morgan, Gillett, PA; eleven
grandchildren, Bryon (Beth) Tuttle, Douglas (April) Tuttle, Robert (Hilary)
Roe, Martin and Daniel Nussbaum, Christina and James Roe, Corey (Fiancé,
Jessica) Burns, Courtney Burns, Jamie (Kim) Morgan and Lindsey Morgan; twelve
great grandchildren, Kelly, Allison, Benjamin, Katie, Kristina, Terra, Barry,

W. Roe and she was the last of five siblings. Dorothy passed away a day before
her second husband, Laverne E. Knapp, his children and their families also
survive. A homemaker and devoted mother, Dorothy was active in the Elmira and
Horseheads Moose Club where she held many chairs including Senior Regent, a
member of the Eastern Star where she earned her Worthy Matrin Degree and was
also a past District Grand Deputy, and a Matron in Queen Frederica Court #22.
Dorothy was an avid doll collector which she was so very proud of.

A longtime resident of Elmira passed away Sunday, November 15, 2009 with his
loving family by his side.
Born on April 17, 1930 in Wellsburg, NY John was the son of the late John
Joseph & Grace Smith Dunn. He was predeceased by his loving wife whom he
adored for 57 years, Barbara A. Maynard Dunn; brothers, Francis Dunn and
William Dunn; brothers-in-law, Gary Woodruff and John Maynard; sister-in-law,
Georgia Seagren.
John is survived by his loving family; children, Michael (Kathy) Dunn, Pine
City; Gregory (Diane) Dunn, Jeffery Dunn and fiance' Susan Schuler, Gerald

in many positions with Mark Twain Little League for over 20 years, he
volunteered with Meal on Wheels for 17 years, was a member of City of Elmira
Zoning Board for several years, served on Brand Park Committee and was a
member of Teamsters Local 529. John was a longtime member of New Beginnings
United Methodist Church and Centenary United Methodist Church. Aside from his
devotion to the NY Yankees, his greatest joy he received was from his family,
especially the many trips he shared with his beloved companion, Barb.

DEAN, Dona Marie
Went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday evening, November 7, 2009
at her Bentley Creek home with her loving family and friends at her side at
the age of 50.
Born on January 17, 1959 in Nazareth, PA, Dona was the daughter of the late
Charles & Philomena Tenaglia Botson. She married Jeffrey Dean on May 22,
1982 in Broomall, PA. Dona lived her life and set an example to others in
serving the Lord. All who knew her had no doubt as to her commitment to Jesus
Christ. She was ever faithful to the command, " loved the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." Dona
shared her faith boldly and without embarrassment. We can be assured, even
now, she is sitting at the feet of Jesus pelting Him with those unanswered
questions we have all been asking.
Surviving is her loving husband Jeffrey Dean; children, Kellie Marie (Jay)
Woodward, Jeffrey Cole Matthew Dean, Nicole Victoria Dean, Jessica Lin Dean;

DUNHAM, Dean W.
A lifelong resident of Perine St. Elmira passed away, Wednesday morning,
November 4, 2009 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age
of 81.
Born on March 16, 1928, son of the late Charles Warner & Lena Morehouse
Dunham. He was also predeceased by his sister, Beatrice Dunham and brother,
LaVern Dunham. Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret
"Diane" Brinthaupt Dunham; their children, Robert (Trish) Dunham;
Gary and David Dunham; and Debra (Richard) Depue; sister-in-law, and her
family, Liz Depue; grandchildren, Kim (Eric) McDermott, Bob, Tonya, Jason,
Keith, Billy and Mathew Dunham; Michael (Nikki) Depue, Tim (Kaylee) Depue;
numerous great grandchildren; a nephew, John (Jean) Dunham; and many cherished
friends.
Dean graduated from Southside High School and worked on the P&R Railroad,
Westinghouse, operated his own television store first on Southport St. and
later on Cedar St. and Pennsylvania Ave., drove school bus for Notre Dame High
School and the Elmira City School Dist. He loved fishing and travel,
volunteered for the American Red Cross during the Agnes Flood of 1972; Meals
on Wheels and donated regularly to charity, He was a very active member of the
Christian Faith Fellowship Church. Dean was devoted to his family as a
husband, father and grandfather. "He will be missed more than he will
ever know".
A Celebration of Dean's Life will take place on Friday morning, November 6,
2009 at 11 am in the Christian Faith Fellowship Church, (meeting in the
Seventh Day Adventist Church) 813 Maple Ave. Elmira, NY 14904, with his friend
and pastor, James Crupi officiating. Burial will take place at the family's
convenience in Woodlawn Cemetery.
WHITE, Donald
A lifelong resident of the Millerton, PA community passed away on Friday
evening, October 30, 2009 at home following an illness under the care of his
loving family at the age of 83.
Born on October 13, 1926 in Tioga County, Don was the son of the late Bert
& Leona Wheeler White. Dedicated to his country, Don served in the United
States Navy during WWII. He was employed as a Mason with Local Union #3. Civic
minded, Don was a member of the VFW, Moose, the American Legion, and was a
member of the Jackson Center United Methodist Church. His interests included,
NASCAR, fishing, enjoyed music and dancing. He married Rena Gilbert on August
20, 1987 in Southport. Together they cherished a close and loving family.
Surviving is his loving wife, Rena Gilbert White, Millerton, PA; Don's sons,
Donald (Penny) White, Danny (Marlene) White, Timothy White, and Jimmy Steele;
Rena's daughters, Julie Ann (Donald) Bull and Carrie (Brian Smith) Cady;
several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne (Beverly) White;
several special nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Elouise Sproule
and brothers, Lester and Lawrence Albert.

BIVIANO, Barbara Baxter
Originally of Norwich, NY passed away on Monday morning, November 2, 2009 at
St. Joseph's Hospital
at the age of 90. Born February 21, 1919, Barbara was the daughter of the late
Charles & Grace Wheeler Baxter. During her long career in nursing she
worked as a private, public health, and school nurse. Her many interests
included reading, knitting, playing the piano, and rooting for the Atlanta
Braves. She married N. John Biviano who predeceased her in 1984. Surviving are
her children, David (Julie) Biviano, Pine City; Brenda Matthews, Hot Springs
Village, AR; and Gary (Suzanne) Biviano, Knoxville, TN; four grandchildren,
Michael (Julie) Biviano, Jennifer (Brian) McKenzie, Elizabeth (Darren) Barker,
Andrew (Elizabeth) Biviano; four great grandchildren and several cousins. At
Barbara's request, there will be no prior calling hours. A Mass of Christian
Burial will take place Thursday, November 5, at 10 am in St. Mary's Church,
Elmira with the Reverend Richard Farrell officiating. Burial will take place
at the family's convenience in St. Paul's Cemetery, Norwich, NY. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to "St. Mary's
Church-Smile Train", 224 Franklin St. Elmira, NY 14904. Smile Train is a
program that supports free life-changing cleft surgeries for children in
impoverished countries.
BENJAMIN, Kathy Venessa
A lifelong resident of the Southport community passed away on Sunday
afternoon, October 25, 2009 at Elcor Health Services where she had been
receiving care following a lengthy illness at the age of 54.
Born on July 11, 1955 in Elmira, Kathy was the daughter of Clara Thomas
Allington. She was employed by the A&P Foods and the Elmira City School
District as a teacher's aide at Broadway Elementary for many years. In serving
the Lord, she was a member of the New Beginnings Church. Kathy enjoyed
shopping, country music and time spent with her family .
She is survived by her husband, James Benjamin; son, Michael Benjamin, both of
Southport; daughter, Dana (Chris) Laughlin, Beaver Dams; 3 grandchildren, JJ,
Kyle and Kalli; mother, Clara Wishneska, Southport; sister, Dolores McMahon
and brother, Wayne (Carol) Allington, Elmira; nieces, nephews and Kathy's
beloved feline companion, "Koko".
She was predeceased by her daughter, Ericka, brother, John Peterson, and
stepfather, John Peterson.

LaComb, Burke A.
A lifelong resident of Elmira, passed very unexpectedly Sunday evening,
October 4, 2009 at the age of 67.
Born on November 3, 1941 in Elmira, NY Burke was the son of the late, Leon
& Nora Burke LaComb. Throughout his life, He was well liked. Burke faced
obstacles with determination and great strength. During a Southside High
School football game he received a serious injury which left him comatose for
2 months. He survived the injury and went on to graduate from Southside in
1960. Before the injury, Burke earned a 4 year academic scholarship to Ohio
State University which he was never able to fulfill. He continued to work hard
the rest of his life despite the permanent physical limitations the injury
caused. Burke devoted his life to helping others by volunteering his time for
the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Pathways, American Cancer Society,
Sts. Peter & Paul's Church Soup Kitchen and was certified in speech
therapy helping others less fortunate than himself. Before his injury he not
only was a diehard NY Yankees fan but was also scouted by the team because of
his 450 batting average. He played football against Ernie Davis and held a
very high respect for the man. Burke is a member of the Local Sports Hall of
Fame and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
Surviving is his loving family, siblings, Ann Vieira, Elmira; Dennis (Kathy)
LaComb, Elmira; Keith (Sandra) LaComb, Knox, PA; 13 nieces and nephews; many
great nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mary Corkins, Elmira. In
addition to his parents, Burke was also predeceased by his brother and
sister-in-law, Brian (JoAnn) LaComb.

WOUGHTER, Terry Star
A longtime resident of the Mosherville, PA community went home to be with the
Lord, Wednesday evening, October 7, 2009 following a long illness at the age
of 70.
Born on April 10, 1939, Terry was the son of the late Sydney & Irene Monks
Woughter.
He graduated from Southside High School in 1957. Dedicated to his country he
served 2 tours of duty in the United States Navy. Terry married Jacqueline
McGettrick on June 28, 1958 in Elmira. Together they raised a close and loving
family who enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing and hunting, leaving many
cherished memories behind. A hard worker and good provider, Terry was employed
by Weyerhaeuser for many years. In serving the Lord, he was a member of the
Mosherville Bible Church.
Surviving is his loving family, wife of 51 years, Jacqueline McGettrick,
Mosherville; their children, Karen (Sheldon) Roblyer, Corning; Stuart (Brenda)
Woughter, Gillett, PA; and John (Debra) Woughter, Pine City; 7 grandchildren,
Jason (Amanda) Roblyer, Matthew (Nickie) Woughter, Kristen (Marlon) Walker,
Tara (Adam) Hills, Timothy, Joshua and Stephanie Woughter; 4 great

A lifelong resident of the Gillett, PA community passed away, Monday morning,
October 5, 2009 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following a brief illness at
the age of 75.
Born on April 9, 1934 in Wells Township, PA, LaRue was the son of the late
LaRue & Winifred Sterling Avery. He married Dora Ann May on September 4,
1953 and they recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.
LaRue was employed by Fairway Springs for 23 years and retired as a
supervisor. A devoted family man, He enjoyed caring for his family and his
home. LaRue cherished the many winters he spent in Florida and just being near
his beloved, Dora Ann. He was outgoing and enjoyed making people laugh. He was
an active member at the Fassett Baptist Church.
Surviving is his loving family, wife Dora Ann May Avery, Gillett, PA; their
two sons, Randy (Mary Ellen) Avery and Rodney (Sandra) Avery all from
Mooresville, NC; grandchildren, Jenna (Chris) Close, Chad, Kyle and Kelli
Avery, Brian (Robin) Picarazzi, and Anthony Picarazzi; great grandchildren,
Sophia Close, Emma and Ella Picarazzi; sisters, Winifred Harkness and Joyce

SULLIVAN, Dr. Cornelius
"Doc"
A much loved Physician and family man, passed away at his home in Columbia
Cross Roads, PA on Tuesday afternoon, September 29, 2009.
Born on November 2, 1927, Cornelius was the son of the late Cornelius F. &
Geraldine Ridgway Sullivan. He attended Peekskill Military Academy, graduated
from LaSalle High School and pursued an education in medicine. He graduated
from LaSalle College and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and
completed his residency there. Dr. Sullivan was a founding member of
Warminster General Hospital and was instrumental in the development of the
Burmont X ray, C.T. and M.R.I. Departments along with the first free standing
Emergency Room. Cornelius was also the founder and proprietor of the
"Tree House" a flower shop in Warminster, PA, before moving to the
Bentley Creek area where he established a practice. "Doc" became
very well known in the Bentley Creek community and surrounding areas for his
personal care and bedside manner. He was a true gentleman and country doctor.
Always faithful, he was a communicant of St. Anne's, Our Lady of Perpetual
Help and St. John's parishes. He married Rose M. Ewerth on June 2, 1951 in
Philadelphia, PA and she predeceased him on October 7, 1999. "Doc"
was also predeceased by his son, Gregory (Nadine's twin), and two
grandchildren, Damian and Alison. Surviving are his beloved twelve children,
Cornelius, Nadine, Laureen, Brian, Christopher, Matthew, Kathleen, Francine,
Shawn, Constance, Gregory, Dion and their respective family's; 31
grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 nephews; brother-in-law, Robert
Ewerth and a community of appreciative patients and friends. Family and

"Rosey"
A kind and caring husband and father, who resided in Pine City, passed away
following a brief illness on Saturday morning, September 26, 2009 at the Arnot-Ogden
Medical Center at the age of 52. Born on October 31, 1956 in Elmira, Scott was
the son of Manford & Adeline Dalora Rosenheck. Possessing a strong
dedication to education, Scott graduated from Southside High School in 1974
and received his Bachelors Degree from Bucknell University in 1978 along with
his Master's Degree from Binghamton University in 1993. Scott was a Paralegal
employed by his father's law firm, Manford Rosenheck Attorney at Law. His many
interests included music, reading, and his cottage on Kueka Lake. He was also
interested in local youth sports and was an active member and President of the
Southport Recreation Association. Scott also enjoyed sports himself, his
favorite being the Yankees and his long-standing coaching position of the
Cougars Elmira Modified Softball Team. Scott's first love was for his family,
and he enjoyed taking many trips with them. Scott is survived by his loving
wife and companion of 23 years, Kathy Betts Rosenheck and their son, Jeff,
both of Pine City; father-in-law, Robert Betts, Elmira; aunt, Rose Davis,
Southport; and many cherished friends. In addition to his parents, Scott was
also predeceased by his mother-in-law, Barbara Eggersdorf Betts. Family and

are five delightful grandchildren and their spouses and six precious great
grandchildren."Cy" was a pilot, a T.W.A. Captain, building

years with the Elmira City School District as a Teacher's Aide. She enjoyed
being a homemaker, reading, crossword puzzles and cross stitch. The joy of her
life was her family and especially the love she had for her grandchildren.

"Weiner"
A longtime resident of the Coryland, PA community passed away, Sunday morning,
September 13, 2009 following a 40 year battle with M.S. at the age of 64.
Born on May 26, 1945, Duane was the son of the late Allen & Dorothy Marsh
Wright and brother to the late, Robert Wright.
He served his country in Thailand during the Vietnam War in the United States
Army and quickly achieved the position of Sergeant. While in service he was
awarded several honors for his service. Duane married Carolyn Jordan on
September 28, 1968 in the Fassett Baptist Church by Pastor Donald Rockwell. A
hard working man, Duane was employed by Upstate Tool Inc. and Corser
Manufacturing for many years. He enjoyed his life's work and was well
respected in the Tool and Die field by his colleagues. An outdoorsman, he
enjoyed hunting, bike riding and was a passionate Richard Petty fan. Duane was
also a woodworker and in his time off enjoyed helping his neighbors and
friends. He was proud of, and preferred his red Farmall Tractor to any green
ones.

"Bill"
A lifelong resident of the Pine City community, passed away Monday evening,
August 31, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital following a brief illness at the age
of 62.
Born on July 28, 1947 in Elmira, Bill was the son of the late William
&Theresa Masia Zinn. He was a graduate of Southside High School Class of
1965. After school he proudly served his country on 3 tours of duty during the
Vietnam War while enlisted in the Navy. After returning home, Bill attended
Corning Community College after which he earned a Bachelors Degree in
Electrical Engineering from Buffalo State University. He married Marilyn Smith
on May 27, 1972 in St. Mary's Church and they shared a wonderful life
together. Bill was highly respected in his field as a Customer Service Manager
with Hardinge Inc. where he was employed for 34 years. He was a communicant of
St. Mary's Church. A man with many interests, fishing at his beloved cottage
on Seneca Lake, hunting on the land he called home, cross country skiing and
caring for his 1962 Corvette. Bill was a passionate family man who enjoyed
making those around him laugh. He was often the center of attention at
gatherings with his quick wit and ability to make everyone feel welcome and a
part of his large family. He would never seek accolades but was happy to help
those in need from behind the scenes.

A lifelong resident of Elmira went home to be with the Lord on Monday
afternoon, August 17, 2009 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an
illness at the age of 91.
Born on February 15, 1918 in Elmira, Winnie was the daughter of the late
Glendour & Florence McElroy Bundy. She married Ralph "Duck"
Spence in 1938 and he predeceased her in 1993. Winnie was employed by Marine
Midland Bank for over 30 years until her retirement. In serving the Lord, she
was a charter member of the Christian Faith Fellowship Church, a member of the
Eastern Stars, enjoyed making dolls and collecting them, gardening, traveling,
sewing, playing Bridge, Thursday morning Musicals and caring for her cherished
home.
Surviving is her loving daughter, Joyce (Ron) Landon, Downingtown, PA; five
granddaughters, Kathy King, Nancy Norton, Vicki Bergquist, Laurie Spagnoli and
Sheri (Al) Grother; seven great grandchildren, Travis and April McGrath,
Matthew King, TJ Brown and Michael Spagnoli; nieces and nephews especially her
cherished niece, Jeanne Weaver along with many friends.

Passed away Thursday, August 6, 2009 in her Millerton, PA home in the care of
her loving husband, Bill Everett; dear friend and caregiver, Kitty Vanderpool
and Guthre Hospice following a long illness at the age of 57.
Born on August 31, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of Malachy &
Rose Donnelly McGeary. Rita was married to William Everett Jr. on October 16,
1997 in Southport. Rita was employed by F.M. Howell Company, Sheddens and
Shepherd's Food Market. Her interests included taking care of her home and
family, her dogs, crafting, gardening and attending auctions and flea markets.
Surviving is her loving family, her husband, William Everett Jr. Millerton,
PA; sons, Arthur James (Adriane) Millard; Malachy (Rebecca) Millard, both of
Chesney, SC;
step-daughters, Brooklyn and Miriah; step-sons, William (Elizabeth) Everett,
Elmira; and Ian Everett, Wellsburg; grandchildren, Dylan, Bronson, Brandon,
Noah, Christopher;
step-grandchildren, Nick, Conner, C.J., Grace and Naveh; sisters, Rose Myhre,
Theresa Birch; brothers, Thomas (Brenda) McGeary and Michael McGeary; nieces
and nephews, cherished friends, including Tina Morrison and Riley Morrison and
their son, Gavin.
In addition to her parents, Rita was predeceased by her brothers, Kevin and
Malchy McGeary and her brother-in-law, Myhre Martine.

Little, Irene L. Hughes
Of Elmira Heights, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Arnot-Ogden Medical
Center following an illness at the age of 78.
Born on July 1, 1931 in Ithaca, NY, Irene was the daughter of the late Kenneth
C. & Antoinette Pettinato Hughes, Irene was raised and spent most of her
life on the Southside of Elmira. She married Glenn Little on February 10,
1973. A homemaker, Irene was also employed by Artistic Greetings, the
Remington Rand and was a bookkeeper for her family business, Hughes
Excavating.
Her interests included playing cards, dice, watching the Yankees on television
and companionship with her family who survive; loving husband, Glenn Little
Sr.; her children, Lynn (Mark) Hill, Elmira Heights; Donald W. Hughes and his
fiancée, Carol Lee Crawford, Swannanoa, NC; step children, Glenn Little Jr.,
Elmira Heights; David Little Montgomery, AL; grandchildren, Theresa

A resident of the Pine City community passed away at his home with his loving
family by his side, Sunday, July 19, 2009 at the age of 72.
Born on December 20, 1936 in Sayre, PA, Robert was the son of the late John E.
& Caroline Pack Deming. Possessing a hard work ethic from an early age, He
served his country as a United States Marine. Bob was employed by Thatcher
Glass for over 25 years as a mold maker and was a member of the Local
Teamsters Union. With a wide variety of interests, Bob enjoyed the outdoors,
hunting and fishing, his pets, quilt making, reading and Internet Trivia. Bob
was a devoted and caring husband to his loving wife for 25 years, Linda Burrow

(Todd A.) Jones, Oneonta; Marty (Bernadette) Deming, Pine City; Linda's

A long time resident of the Caton and Pine City communities passed away very
suddenly on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at the
age of 80.
Born on September 20, 1928 in Webb Mills, John was the son of the late Oakley
B. & Geraldine M. Avery Sterling. From an early age John learned the
importance of hard work and applied to his dairy farm, throughout his life. He
married Phyllis A. Smith on March 18, 1950 in the Webb Mills Church where they
have been members for many years and also active members in the Caton United
Methodist Church. In addition to farming, John was also employed by Edgecombs
Carriage House and Elmira Stamping. His interests included hunting, quilting,
gardening and flea markets. Surviving is his cherished family, wife of 59
years, Phyllis A. Smith Sterling; children, Rosanna (Earl "Boney")
Audinwood, Bruce (Gaylene Page) Sterling, Lois Jenkins, Joseph (Lisa)
Sterling, Carol (Tim) Barner and Nancy Sterling all of Caton and Pine City;
many grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister, Mary Farmer, Pine City;
sister-in-law, Mary Sterling, Pine City; son-in-law, Timothy Jenkins, many

A resident of Elmira passed away unexpectedly, Sunday July 12, 2009 at her
home at the age of 54. Born on July 3, 1955 in Elmira, Carol was the daughter
of the late James M. & Barbara L. Dow Morris. She was the wife of Willy
Knights who predeceased her along with her sister, Sarah Morris. Carol was
first employed by Elmira College and most recently St. Joseph's Hospital. She
attended Hope Baptist Chapel and her interests including walking, swimming and
the love she freely gave to her family who survive, daughter, Alysia Knights;
two grandchildren, Holonah Knights and Johnysia Moore; siblings, Debbie
(Scott) Shaw, Michael "Larry" Morris, Darlene (James) Lyon, Mary
(Floyd Voorhees) Morris, James (Teresa) Morris, Jamie (Al Baker) Morris and

A longtime resident of Southport passed away Tuesday morning, July 14, 2009 at
the Chemung County Nursing Facility where he had been receiving care at the
age of 83. Born on June 18, 1926 in Johnson City, NY, John was the son of the
late Joseph & Anna Vrabel Salva. He married Rose Ann Klenotich on
September 10, 1960 in Binghamton. John was an Auditor for NYS Dept. of Labor
for many years until his retirement. He is best remembered and known for his
life-long passion as a Ham Radio Operator. He was a former communicant of Sts.
Peter & Paul's Church and most recently, St. Mary's Church. He was a hard
working man who was very proud of his family who survive, wife of 49 years,
Rose Ann Klenotich Salva; daughters, Janel Salva, Rochester; and Karen (Kevin)
Mowrey, Gloversville; granddaughter, Lauren Rose Mowrey; brother, Thomas

A longtime resident of Chemung passed away at his home, Saturday, July 4, 2009
at the age of 79.
Born on November 15, 1929 in Elmira, NY, Edward was the son of the late Carl
& Clara Cadek Bunke.
He married Marianne Forsythe on May 4, 1957 in Southport. Together they raised
a loving family and instilled the importance of a strong faith in the Lord in
their family. Edward was a longtime member of the Elmira Christian Center
where he was very active in the bus ministry for decades. Mr. Bunke was well
known as a welder and with his father-in-law, operated Forsythe Welding in
Southport until his retirement. His interests were in the outdoors, hunting,
fishing and baseball.
Surviving is his wife and friend of 52 years, Marianne Forsythe Bunke; their
loving children, Lou Ann (Michael) DiPetta, Erin; Robert (Arlene) Bunke,
Chemung; Doris (Tom Washburn) Bunke, Horseheads; and Clara (Tom) Tryon,
Horseheaeds; longtime family friend, Gladys Snell, Chemung; six grandchildren,

Jonas
Of Pine City, NY passed away
peacefully while under the care of St. Joseph's Hospital SNF on Wednesday,
June 17, 2009 at the age of 75.
Born on April 7, 1934 in Elmira, NY, Jonas was the son of the late Richard J.
& Mildred Smith Seeley. He married Rose Mary Brewer on June 13, 1953 in
the Millerton United Methodist Church where he has been an active member for
many years. Mr. Seeley was employed by NYSEG for over 43 years and retired as
a General Foreman. He was devoted to the Boy Scouts and supported their
outstanding benefit to youth. Jonas enjoyed wildlife and built his dream home
in Pine City during the late 70's. While there he had grown and pruned
evergreens. Many of those trees adorned peoples homes during Christmas time
and assisted his children with their continuing education. His grandchildren
fondly remember his delights, pancakes, ice cream and that he was a sports
enthusiast who recently converted to the Yankees.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion of 56 years, Rose Mary
Smith Seeley; three children, Jan Seeley, Rochester; Jeff (Dale) Seeley,
Williamsport, PA; and Mary Seeley (Scott Hudson), Pittsburgh, PA; four
grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Bryson, Matt (Charis) Seeley, Tyler Hudson and

"Doug"
A longtime resident of the Horseheads community passed away, Monday, June 8,
2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester following an illness at the age of
62.
Born on March 21, 1947 in Gloversville, NY, Doug was the son of the late David
L. & Viola M. Dopp Blair. After graduating from Horseheads High School,
Doug served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He
was a member of the Horseheads American Legion Bentley Trumble Post # 442 and
the Elmira Heights VFW. Doug was employed by the Horseheads School District
for many years as a custodian. His interests included bowling with his friends
and spending time with his loving sisters who survive, Pat Blair, Horseheads;
Bonnie Sampson, Horseheads; niece, Stephanie (Brad) Thomas; nephew, Scott
(Michele) Sampson; great nephews, Zachary and Christian; aunt, Kay Johnson;
along with several cousins and his canine buddy, Abbey.

"Ginny"
A longtime resident of the Fassett, Pa community passed away at her Riverside
Elmira Apartment where she had resided for the last 8 years. Ginny had fought
a courageous battle with Ovarian Cancer and was surrounded by her loving
family when she passed from this life, Sunday evening, June 7, 2009 at the age
of 70.
Born on October 31, 1938 in Chemung, NY; she was the daughter of the late,
Fletcher & Rose Mary Masin Stage. A devoted wife and companion, Ginny was
married to her beloved Charles "Red" Silvernail who predeceased her
in 2001after 46 years of marriage. Very civic minded, Ginny was a former
member of the Elmira Heights American Legion Clarence Oliver Post # 154, the
Wellsboro Moose Lodge, Fassett Ladies Auxiliary and the Home Bureau. In
serving the Lord, she was a member of the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist
Church. Her interests included, painting, flower gardening, camping, bowling
and above all her cherished family who survive; son and daughter-in-law, Larry
& Bonnie Silvernail;, Horseheads; daughter and son-in-law, Rose & John
Pona, Ormond Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Chad (Jennifer White) Silvernail;

Of Cedar St. Southport passed away peacefully on her birthday, Tuesday
afternoon, May 26, 2009 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility at the age of
89.
Born in Williamsport, PA, Hilda was the daughter of the late Howard H. &
Cora E. Trick Sornberger. Hilda is fondly remembered as a kind person, who
through difficult times remained positive and kind to others. She truly
appreciated the people who cared for and befriended her. She was a friend to
animals; loved children, flower gardening, baking, candlestick making and was
a member of the RSVP.

A longtime resident Holden Rd. Pine City passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009 in
the comfort of her home under the care of her loving family and Southern Tier
Hospice at the age of 91 following a long and full life.
Born on September 15, 1917 in Elmira, Margaret was the daughter of the late,
Joseph L. & Celia Clinton Watts. She was a devoted wife to James Francis
who passed in 1967. Margaret was employed for over 40 years at Moore Business
Forms as a secretary. Her interests included reading, cooking and caring for
her home. She was a devoted mother and friend to her daughters and enjoyed
being a grandmother. She was a communicant of Sts. Peter & Paul's Church.
Margaret was a friend to all animals and opened her heart to those in need of
love.
Surviving are her daughters, JoAnne (Lawrence) Stull, Pine City; and Barbara
(George) Krajnak, Athens, OH; eight grandchildren, Susan (Al) Brewster, Kathy
(John) Bailey, Michael (Mary) Krajnak, Joe (Lizette) Krajnak, George (Chellie)

STRUBLE, Dale H.
Formerly of Pine City and presently on Hampstead, NC, passed away very
unexpectedly in North Carolina on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the age of 62.
Born in Elmira, Dale was the son of the late Ross & Helen (Bergh) Struble
and grandson of the late August & Anna Bergh. He was a loving and
supportive father who was devoted to his three children: Tammy (Brent) Coston,
Hampstead, NC; Jillene Parmelee, Carlisle, PA; and Dale H. Struble II, Suwanee,
GA; grandchildren, Brett, Kyle and Troy Toukatly, Trevor Coston, Brittney,
Devon, and Sydney Parmelee and Gavin Struble; brother, Ross Struble,
Southport, and sister Linda Struble, Southport. Dale is also survived by uncle
and aunts, Ken & Marg Bergh, Vi Bergh and Connie Bergh all of Elmira,
along with many cousins, friends and extended family. Dale was also
predeceased by his grandson, Cody Parmelee, the mother of his children,
Marjorie Wood Struble, aunt Alma Maloney and uncles Howard Bergh and Harold
Bergh. Dale was a 1965 graduate of Southside High School and attended
Williamsport Community College. He served his country during the Vietnam
Conflict, was seriously injured and was awarded two purple hearts. Following
his service to our country he was employed as an ironworker and more recently
by the US Postal Service until his retirement. Dale enjoyed endless memories
with his family on Keuka Lake as a child. He was an avid NASCAR fan and
enjoyed sports. Family and friends will be received at Bethany Lutheran

Passed away at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness on Tuesday, May
12, 2009 at the age of 86.
Born on February 4, 1923 in Canton, PA, Lawrence was the son of the late
Lawrence E. & Alice E. Walburn Austin. Having spent his childhood in
Canton, he graduated from Canton High School in 1941. Proud of his service and
country, He served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He was
employed by General Electric as a patternmaker until his retirement. Mr.
Austin was married to Betty Jane Depew in 1948 and she predeceased him in
1994. Very musical, Larry enjoyed playing the harmonica for church services.
He was much loved by the Fassett Baptist Church and Westminster Presbyterian
Church congregations. His wit, smile and sense of humor will be missed.
Surviving is his loving family, sons, Charles (Susan) Austin, Horseheads;
Stephen (LuPita) Austin, Pheonix, AZ; six grandchildren, Christopher (Evelyn)

Elmira for many years. Barbara shared a big place in her heart for animals and

A resident of the Pine City community and formerly of Rochester, NY passed
away very unexpectedly at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness on
Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the age of 34.
Born on January 26, 1975 in the Country of Romania and remained a German
citizen, she was the daughter of the late Eugen & Aloisia Urwik-Beimel
Neubauer. She married Brian Potter on April 24, 1998 in Germany where he was
serving his country in the US Army. A loving and devoted mother, her passions
were her children, family & friends and caring for her home. She is
survived by her husband and companion Brian Potter; their two children, Tyler
age 6 and Savana age 2; sister, Linde (Paul) Neubauer, Germany; brother, Eugen
"Ene" (Manuela) Neubauer, Germany; mother-in-law, Jackie Potter,
Rochester, NY; father-in-law, Ronald Potter, Branch Port, NY; sisters-in-law,

A longtime resident of the Southport community, passed away at the Chemung
County Nursing Facility following an illness on Monday April 27, 2009 at the
age of 66.
Born on May 13, 1942 in Elmira, Mary was the daughter of the late William
& Marjorie Colwell Spillane. Mary was very proud of her Irish heritage
originating from County Cork, Ireland. A homemaker, Mary's interests included
reading, listening to music, caring for her family and the joy that comes with
being a grandmother. Possessing a strong faith, She was a longtime communicant
of St. Mary's Church.
Surviving is her loving family, husband, John Kelley, Elmira; son, Douglas
(Colleen Pidel) Botsford. Astoria, NY; a grandson, Brian Gabriel Botsford;
sister, Roberta Cerio, Falls Church, VA; niece, Julia Char, Manassas, VA; and

Grinnell, Shirley S.
Formerly of Jobs Corners, PA passed away at his Elmira home following an
illness on Easter Sunday Morning, April 12, 2009 following a long, full and
productive life at the age of 102.
Born on April 23, 1906 in Moserville, PA, Shirley was the son of the late,
Henry & Carrie Sheive Grinnell. He married Doris Hamilton on May 10, 1940
in Jobs Corners, PA. A hardworking man, Shirley was proudly employed by
American LaFrance in Elmira for over 30 years as a Chief Inspector. An
outdoorsmen, he enjoyed hunting, and gardening. Mr. Grinnell was very active
in his community and served on the Jackson Township School Board, was a
charter member of the Big Elm Fire Department and devoted much of his time to
the Jobs Corners Cemetery. In serving the Lord he was very active in the
Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church for many years and previously
worshiped at the Daggett United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Doris Hamilton Grinnell,
Elmira; their children, Mary Stormer, Tillson, NY; and Dennis (Rita) Grinnell,
Wellsburg; four grandchildren, Gary (Melissa) Grinnell; Amy (Daniel) Aken;
Bemjamin and David Stormer ; five great grandchildren, Gavin, Olivia, Ella,
Parker and Emma; several nieces, nephews and family friends. Shirley was the
last living sibling of eleven.

Passed away at his Pine City home following an illness on Tuesday afternoon,
April 7, 2009 in the care of his loving family and Southern Tier Hospice at
the age of 79.
Born on February 5, 1930 in Olean, NY, Clif was the son of Clifton N. &
Mable G. Rose Orme. He married Joycelynn Rosekrans on October 11, 1953. A
hardworking man, Clif was employed by Local 281 Carpenters Union of Horseheads.
An outdoorsmen he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was well known at the Mark
Twain Golf Course where he was employed in later years. In serving his
country, Cliff was in the United States Army as a paratrooper. Surviving is
his loving family, wife and companion, Joycelynn Orme, Pine City; their sons,
Gregory P. (Dawn) Orme, Pine City; and Rodney A. Orme, Ithaca; two
grandchildren, Jessica M.E. Orme and Kevin P. Orme; sister, Joyce Hay, France;
brother, the Reverend A. Dan Orme, Athens, GA; nieces, nephews and family
friends. Clif was a grandfather figure to many children in the community.

A resident of the Horseheads community passed away, Tuesday, afternoon, March
31, 2009 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at the age of 86.
Born on June 9, 1922 in Arnot, PA, Louise was the daughter of the late Fred
& Barbara Walker Knapp. She married Dexter Siglin in 1946 and he
predeceased her in 1992 together they provided a loving home and went without
to provided for their family. A homemaker, Louise enjoyed vegetable and flower
gardening. The outdoors, fishing and camping. She loved children and loved
being a grandmother.
Surviving is her loving daughter, June (Larry) Gleason, Horseheads; eight
grandchildren, Samuel, John (Tara), Tracy (Leanne), Bill (Erica), Bridget
(Dan), Bryan (Lori), Larry II, Brett, Dexter III and Sara; fourteen great
grandchildren, Brandi, Elizabeth, Josh, Mikayla, Alexandra, Cameron, Jamison,

nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Louise was predeceased by her

A longtime resident of the East Lawrence, PA community went home to be with
her Lord and Savior on Friday afternoon, March 27, 2009 following a brief
illness at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA at the age of 80.
Nellie was born on April 7, 1928 in Knoxville, PA daughter of Chauncey B.
& Margaret E. Brennan Wainwright. She married James F. Hills on August 11,
1951. Together they set a Christian example to others by the love and
commitment they held for each other. Nellie held a strong faith and in serving
the Lord, was the Organist for many years at the East Lawrence Baptist Church
where she was an active member. A housewife devoted to her family, Nellie
enjoyed crocheting, traveling and camping. In addition to her home, Nellie was
also employed at one time by Elmira Bank & Trust Co., Artistic Greetings
and as a Bookkeeper for the family contracting business.

Jennings, Eileen M.
A longtime resident of the Elmira area passed away peacefully on Thursday
morning, March 19, 2009 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility following an
illness at the age of 74. Born on October 27, 1934 in Elmira, Eileen was the
daughter of the late Joseph C. & Alva Scherer Saltus. She married Elwin
"Al" Jennings in 1951 and together they have shared a lifetime of
memories.
She was employed as the Office Manager for Dr. Peter L. Strumpf DDS for
decades. Devoted to her career, Eileen became part of the Strumpf family. She
was a former secretary and treasurer for the Southport Numismatic Association.
A devoted homemaker, she provided a warm and comfortable home for her family
who survive and cherish her memory; loving husband of 58 years, Elwin
"Al" Jennings; their sons, CMSgt (Ret) Thom (Mirjam) Jennings, Eagle
River, AK; and Timothy (Deborah) Jennings, Albany, NY; grandchildren, Christie

Of Horseheads passed away Friday evening, March 13, 2009 at the home of her
loving daughter and son-in-law, Sandy & Joe Slavin of Elmira following a
lengthy illness at the age of 80. In addition to her daughter and son-in-law,
Marilyn is survived by her grandchildren, Missy (Todd) Campell, Jim (Jamie)
Slavin and Lynnette (Jason) Singer; several great grandchildren, nieces and
nephews, including a very special niece, Bobbi (Roger) Hugg; nephew, Archie
(Linda) Sturch and a special friend, Gilda Murdock who Marilyn thought of as
another daughter. Marilyn was born on November 6, 1928 daughter of the late
Charles & Henrietta Gill Mault. She was predeceased by her loving husband,
Walter Conrad Anderson in 2002 following 50 years of marriage. She was also
predeceased by her siblings, Alva, Eleanor, Arlene, Norma, Marcella, Myra and
Buddy. Marilyn was employed by Gerold's Pharmacy in Horseheads for many years.
Very social, she enjoyed shopping and playing Bingo with her friends.

Our mother has longed to go to Glory since she turned 90 years old. She said
"That was just too old to live". Arthritis is so painful. She
believed the truth, God's Word, the Bible. She had no doubt about her
eternity. On Monday morning, March 9, 2009 she went peacefully in her
Horseheads home to be with her Lord and rejoined with the family she missed at
the age of 96.
Edna was born in Willowby, OH daughter of the late Montague R. & Pamelia
Harrison Holland. In serving the Lord, Edna was a Sunday School Teacher for
many years and always held a strong faith. She loved flower gardening and
raising Morning Glories at her home, enjoyed cooking, caring for her family
and cherished the company of her feline companions. Edna was well known in her
community as an excellent seamstress.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Kathie (Marty) Mansfield, Horseheads
and Karen (LaRue Curren) Ennis, Fassett, PA; five grandchildren, Jill (Rob)

Joseph & Mildred Richlin Marshall. She was a graduate of St. Basil's High
School in Dushore, PA. Jean married John O. Strong in 1947 and he predeceased
her in 1990. Very community minded, Jean was well known, very social and was a
communicant of St. Mary's Church for many years. She retired from the Star
Gazette where she was employed as a Librarian. Jean is survived by her
brother, William Marshall, New Milford, PA; nieces, nephews, great nieces,
great nephews, cousins and cherished friends.

Morgan, Dahl Gene
Of Elmira passed away Sunday, March 1, 2008 at St. Joseph's Hospital following
an illness at the age of 66.
Dahl was born on May 4, 1942 in Waverly, NY, son of the late Robert Dahl &
Olive Miller Morgan. He was employed for many years as a baker at Crystal City
Bakers. His many interests included Ham Radio (N2EJW) the Atlanta Braves,
NASCAR, playing football and the Jackals. Very patriotic, Dahl was honored by
the 56th Battalion for his activities with Echo Taps.
Surviving is his loving wife, Sandra Morgan, Elmira and their children, Scott
Morgan, VA; Joe Morgan, Elmira; Jeff (Stacy Watkins) Morgan, Painted Post;
grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Morgan; brothers, Charles (Donna) Morgan,
Sayre, PA; and Brian Morgan.

Pazahanick, Peter
A long time and well respected gentleman of the Pine City community passed
away, Tuesday evening, February 17, 2009 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center
following an illness at the age of 86.
Peter was born on August 16, 1922 in Hudson, PA, son of the late John &
Julia Pazahanick. At an early age Peter understood the importance of
education. After receiving his Bachelors Degree from Mansfield University, his
graduate work took place at George Peabody College in Tennessee where he
earned his Masters Degree. An avid sportsman, he taught, coached and played
semi-pro baseball. After teaching and coaching sports for many years at
Southside High School, Mr. Pazahanick moved into administration and was a
principal at Ernie Davis Jr. High School for many years until his retirement
from the Elmira City School District. Following his retirement, Peter
continued to take an active role in people's lives and possessed the ability
to focus on each individual person he encountered. He is remembered for his
wit, sense of humor and mostly his smile. He enjoyed gardening and was
employed by Farmers Garden Center. Peter was a communicant of St. Mary's
Church. Dedicated to his country, He served in the United States Coast Guard
during World War II.
He married the love of his life, Mary York on July 16, 1949 in Mansfield, PA.
They set an example to others by their love and devotion for each other. In
addition to Mary York Pazahanick, Peter is also survived by their children,
whom he mentioned often, son, John York (Nancy) Pazahanick, Minneapolis, MN;
their family, grandson, Jarret (Karin) Pazahanick; great grandchildren, Kody

A longtime resident of the Town of Southport passed away in her home on
Thursday February 12, 2009 with her loving family by her side. Born on April
11, 1933 in Farmington, PA, Kay was the daughter of the late Thomas &
Emily (Mertsoc) Harnas.
She married John J. Broschart on July 20,1957 at St. Mary's Church where they
were both long time parishioners. Kay was employed by the Town of Southport
for many years and was well respected by her colleagues. She loved caring for
her home her pets and mostly her family. Children, a daughter, Emilie B.&
Robert Roher, Morrisville, NY; sons, James J. & Diane Broschart, Camillus,
NY; David M. & Claudia Broschart, W. Brookfield, MA; grandchildren,
Matthew Roher, Alec & Erin Broschart; a brother, George Harnas, Adams, NY;
and a niece, Nancy Coppola, Elmira; and her beloved feline companion, Princess
Puff.

Of Pine City passed away Sunday February 1, 2009 suddenly at the age of 60.
Born February 18, 1948 in Washington, DC, Mark was the son of the late Seymour
Friedman and Etta Goldbaum Friedman. He earned his Bachelors Degree from
Cornell University in 1969 and his Masters Degree from Cornell in 1974. He was
a consultant in the field of human resources.
Mark married Barbara Paskoff on February 19, 1971 in Maryland. They have
shared many wonderful memories together. His interests included concern for
the environment, travel, a wide range of music, current events, reading, a
love for the water and much more.
In addition to his wife and companion Barbara, he is survived by his brother,
Neal and his family, Barbara's brother, Bob and his family, and a loving
network of family and friends.
In honoring his wishes there will be no calling hours. A celebration of Mark's
life will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 10 am to 12 noon at
Tanglewood Nature Center, 443 Coleman Ave. Elmira, NY. In the event of a

A cherished husband and father passed away Tuesday afternoon, February 3, 2009
at his Elmira Heights home in the care of his loving family and Southern Tier
Hospice at the age of 58.
Born on July 28, 1950 in Elmira, Louis was the son of Louis & Rita
Cappucci Morgan. He was employed by Westinghouse. Louis married Carrie Stanton
on August 15, 1987 and together they have shared many wonderful memories. Also
surviving are their sons, Michael L. and Patrick J. Morgan along with Louis's
sister, Marie (Mickey) Beeman and many family friends who will be received at

A longtime resident of Elmira Passed away Monday, February 2, 2009 at the
Arnot-Ogden Medical Center.
Born on November 11, 1938 in Elmira, Lucy was the daughter of the late
Theodore & Celia Knowlton Johnson. She was employed by Sears and Roebuck
for 35 years until her retirement. Her interests included writing poetry,
gardening and was an avid animal lover. She was a longtime member of Bethany
Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her children, Rick (Deanna) Curren, Horseheads; Terri (Joe)
Orbin, Watkins Glen; and DJ (Karen) Curren, Pine City; grandchildren,
Nicholas, Anthony and Mikayla Curren, Joey (Jessica) Orbin and Meghan Orbin.

A longtime resident of Elmira passed away peacefully, Saturday, January 31,
2009 at his Southside home at the age of 76.
Born in Corning on January 27, 1933, Don was the son of the late William &
Emma Nares Burris. He married Marilyn Maier on June 30, 1956. Together they
shared a lifetime of happy memories. Don is remembered by his family and many
friends for his loving and welcoming smile. He was employed by the Elmira City
School District as a custodian for 23 years until his retirement. Very civic
minded he was active in Scouting. A devoted communicant of St. Mary's Church,
Don was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, St. Mary's Choir and was
a Eucharistic Minister.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Marilyn Maier Burris;
their sons, Donald V. (Bridget) Burris, Buffalo, NY; and Kevin (fiancée, Kay
Collum) Burris; grandsons, Matthew, John, Luke, Christopher, Joshua and Ben
Burris; great grandson, Brady Burris; a sister-in-law, Rosalie Greene,
brothers-in-law, Wally and Alwynne Maier; uncles, Joe (Carolyn) Nares, Corning

Of Elmira passed away January 22, 2009 while asleep at her home at the age of
63.

CRAIG, Catherine Singer Died
unexpectedly on January 23, 2009 at her home. She was 69 years old and a
lifetime resident of Elmira. Born November 29, 1939 she was the youngest of
three children of Thomas Singer and Alberta Price Craig. Kitty attended local
schools and graduated from high school at the Stoneleigh Prospect Hill School
in Greenfield, Massachusetts. She completed her education at Garland Jr.
College in Boston, then she worked at the Chemung Valley Savings and Loan
Association and its successors until her retirement. She is survived by her
sister Alice McIlrath (Donald) of Rochester, Minnesota; her brother Douglas
Craig (Nancy) of Scarsdale, New York; her nephews Harry N. Hoffman III, Thomas
S. Craig II and Timothy J.L. Craig; her niece Martha P. Hoffman; four great
nephews and a great niece. A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal
Church at11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Interment will be in
Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial gifts be
made to Grace Episcopal Church or to the YWCA of Elmira.
GENSEL, Anna Marie
A lifelong resident of Elmira passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, January
21, 2009 following a long and full life at the age of 94.
Anna was born on February 24, 1914 in here in Elmira, daughter of the late
Thomas & Mary White Dean. She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband
Harry Gensel until he passed in 1966. A homemaker, Anna provided a comfortable
home and is remembered for her wonderful ability in the kitchen. She was a
communicant of St. Mary's Church for many years.
Surviving are her loving children, Maryann Wyse, CT; James (Joan) Gensel, Pine
City; and William Gensel, Elmira; 5 grandchildren, Jeffrey Foley, Kimberley
(Matt Guilbought) Foley, Jacquie (Bill) Moley, Jamie (Audra) Gensel, Jody
(Drew) Onifer; ten and one to be, great grandchildren along with two great
great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and
husband, Anna was also predeceased by a son, Jackie Gensel; sisters, Reose
Dean and Helen Robinson; brothers, Anthony and Carmen Dean.
All services were handled privately at the families convenience on Friday,
January 24, 2009 and Anna was buried next to her husband Harry Gensel in Sts.
Peter & Paul's Cemetery.

Born on May 21, 1919 in Lawrence Township, PA, Louise was the daughter of the

Of Pine City and formerly of Corning, passed away Friday evening, January 9,
2009, in Williamsburg, VA.
Marie was born on December 2, 1927 in Corning, NY daughter of the late Maylon
& Charlotte Edger Gerow.
She married Aubrey "Bob" Allen on January 11, 1944 and he
predeceased her on October 21, 1973. She later married Joseph McChesney on May
22, 1976 and he predeceased her on August 19, 1994.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Averil & John Peters, Knoxville,
TN; her three sons and daughters-in-law, Alvin Allen, Savona, NY; Albert &
Cheryl (Wheeler) Allen , Williamsburg, VA; Richard & Dianna Allen, Pine
City, NY; brothers, Gordon Gerow, Painted Post, NY; Douglas & Emma Gerow,
Painted Post, NY; sisters, Greta & Bob Roberts, FL; Maylonda & Albert
Elliott, Painted Post, NY; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren,
nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, Marie was also
predeceased by her grandson, Robert Allen on September 22, 2002.
A mother and homemaker, Marie enjoyed crocheting keepsakes for her family. She
was very social and enjoyed playing cards and loved spending her winters in
the warmth of Florida.

EWANYK, Peter
A long time resident of the Southside of Elmira passed away peacefully,
Saturday December 27, 2008 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility following an
illness at the age of 86. Born in Elmira on February 3, 1922, Peter was the
son of Cornelius & Anastasia Kudlak Ewanyk. He married Marian Jean Cheney
on March 8, 1947 in St. Nicholas Church. He served his country during WWII in
the Air Force. Mr. Ewanyk retired from NYS Department of Corrections after 32
years of service. In serving the Lord he was a communicant of St. Mary's
Church. He instilled strong values within his family and was very proud of his
children and grandchildren.
Surviving is his loving wife and companion of 61 years, Marian J. Ewanyk;
their children, a daughter, Mary Ann (Ted) Gilkey, Ocean City, MD; twin sons,
Kevin (Erica) Ewanyk, E. Northport, Long Island; and Keith (Laurie) Ewanyk,
Rochester; eight grandchildren, David and Lauren Gilkey, Jonathan, Marissa,
Alicia, Ryan, Rachel, and Ryder Ewanyk; a brother, Henry Ewanyk, Lowman;
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Peter was predeceased by his brothers, John
(Harriet) Iwanik, Basil (Rose) Ewanyk and Paul (Netta) Ewanyk;

A longtime resident of the Bentley Creek, PA community passed away peacefully
with her family at her side Christmas Eve night, December 24, 2008 at St.
Joseph's Hospital following her courageous battle with breast cancer at the
age of 72.
Born on September 1, 1936 in Gibson, PA she was the daughter of the late
Walter & Anna Drozdick Pavelski.
Delores married her love and best friend, George Buck, on September 27, 1958
in Jackson, PA. She was a Registered Nurse having worked for Binghamton City
Hospital and later at St. Joseph's Hospital for many years in maternity, the
emergency room and rehab until her retirement. Surviving is her loving family,
husband and companion of 50 years, George Buck at their Bentley Creek home;
children, LuAnne (Gary) Mikos, Lancaster County, PA; Colleen Dyer, Southport,
NY; and George Jr. (Karen) Buck, Big Flats, NY; seven grandchildren,

and a sister-in-law, Martha Burnell. In serving the Lord, Delores was a

devoted nurse, caring mother and loving wife, Delores invested much time in
her comfortable home, enjoyed gardening, and attended her grandchildren's
activities. Always active, she enjoyed a busy social life, traveled, and loved
visiting the casinos.

Passed away peacefully in her Pine City home on Wednesday, December 24, 2008
following an illness at the age of 90. Born on April 7, 1918 in Elmira. Gladys
was the daughter of the late William & Edna Comfort Hulslander. She was
lovingly known as "Peaches" by her husband, Robert Laskaras, Pine
City; also surviving are her daughter and caregiver, Barbara (James) Hornbeck,
Elmira; a daughter, Sandra (Leo) Williams, Elmira; a son, Gary (Jeanette)
Somers, Bentley Creek, PA; daughter-in-law, Jane Somers, Port Richey, FL;
Eleven grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren,
nieces and nephews; sisters, Shirley Gilbert, Horseheads; Vera Kwasnik,
Horseheads; Janice (Don) Saunders, Elmira; a brother, Jack Hulslander, Elmira
Heights; and a brother-in-law. James Laskaris, Elmira.
In addition to her parents Gladys was also predeceased by her first husband,
Glen Somers; a son, Raymond Somers; a sister, Betty and a brother, Glen
Hulslander.
Gladys was formerly employed by the Remington Rand and cared for those in need
as a Certified Nurses Aide with the Chemung County Nursing Facility for many
years. She was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star and very active
in Bethany Lutheran Church as a member for many years.

A longtime resident of the Millport community passed away unexpectedly
Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at the age of
88.
Mary was born in the Town of Dix on July 14,1920, daughter of the late Lewis
and Vinta Edwards.
A devoted companion and wife for over 65 years, She enjoyed traveling and
dinning out with her husband, James Borman, Millport. Also surviving is their
son, James (Bernice) Borman, FL; a sister-in-law, Frances Edwards, Horseheads;
several nieces and nephews. Also very close to Mary & Jim are the Bill
& Harriett Jordan family with whom they have shared many wonderful years
of friendship.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by a sister, Ella and two
brothers, Floyd and Lewis. She was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal
Church in Elmira Heights for many years.

Floyd & Hattie Carney-Chapel Kendall. She married Llewellyn Ameigh on
April 21, 1949 in Canton, PA. A devoted homemaker, Peg enjoyed caring for her
loving family who survive and cherish her memory. A loving husband and
companion of nearly 60 years, Llewellyn "Lew" Ameigh; their seven

Formerly of Big Flats passed away on Monday afternoon, November 24, 2008 at
his Spencer, NY home in the care of his loving family at the age of 87.
Art was born in on August 25, 1921 in Gloucester, MA son of James & Marion
Clark Duncan. He married Vivian Scudder on April 3, 1954 in Greensburg, IN
they moved to Big Flats where Art was employed by A&P Foods as a chemist
for many years until his retirement. In serving his country, He was a WWII
Navy Veteran who served from 1942 - 1946 on the U.S.S. LST 325 as a
Pharmacists Mate 2nd Class and was Honorably Discharged.
Art was involved in many community activities including the Big Flats Rotary
Club. Art enjoyed the outdoors and taking road trips with his family. He would
greet you with a warm smile a funny laugh and piercing blue eyes. Everyone he
would meet was a friend and someone he wanted to get to know.
Surviving is his loving wife and companion of 54 years, Vivian Scudder Duncan,

Medical Center following an illness at the age of 81.
Betty was born on November 16, 1926 in Corning, NY daughter of the late Daniel
& Dorothy Phenes Thompson. She married Clifford "Popo"
Cartwright nearly 65 years ago on November 25, 1943. Betty was employed by St.
Joseph's Hospital for over 30 years and retired as the Supervisor of
Housekeeping. Her many interests included, traveling to Florida and enjoying
warm winters there, gardening, camping and dancing. Betty was an avid sports
fan fond of the Dallas Cowboys and the NY Yankees. She enjoyed attending the
Pennsylvania Ave. United Methodist Church. Her greatest joy was that of her
family who cherish her memory. Her loving husband and companion, Clifford

"Lolita"
A longtime resident of Elmira, passed away Wednesday evening, October 29, 2008
at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in the care of true professionals. Lolita was
born in Yakima, WA on September 3, 1914, daughter of the late Elmer &
Catherine Ennis Clarkson. She was a graduate of Our Lady of Victory Nursing
School . Lolita married George W. Winch in 1936 and together they operated
Winch's Food Market in Elmira for many years. George passed away in 1989. She
was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and had belonged of the Home Bureau.
Also a homemaker, Lolita enjoyed caring for her home and family who survive;
son James (Mary) Winch, Bangor, PA; daughter, Carol Houssock, Horseheads; four
grandchildren, Maureen (Charles) Gordon, Brian Winch, Daniel (Mary) Houssock,
David Houssock; step-grandchild, Stacey (Robert) Casey and her son, Brian
Houssock; a sister, Lillian Coveney, Elmira; nieces, nephews and cousins. In
addition to her parents and husband, Lolita was predeceased by her brother,

EGAN, Joyce E.
A lifelong resident of Elmira passed away Tuesday evening, October 28, 2008 at
Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age of 71.
Born on January 13, 1937 in Elmira, daughter of the late Charles and Erma
Brungard Egan. Joyce was employed by Southern Tier Industries for many years.
Her interests included reading, arts and crafts and Joyce enjoyed playing
BINGO with her many friends.
Surviving is her family; nieces and nephews including, Gary (Inas) Prokopec,
Wellsburg; and Robert Prokopec, Colorado Springs, CO; great nieces and great
nephews including, Christy Prokopec and Michael Prokopec and the many friends
with whom Joyce resided at the ARC Group Homes.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn
(Charles) Prokopec and a brother, Charles (Marie) Egan.

Formerly of Horseheads and Elmira passed away on Monday evening, October 27,
2008 in Bethlehem, PA where she had been residing following an illness.
Born on January 4, 1921 in Elmira, Edith was the daughter of Arthur &
Bertha Smith Cadek. She married George Green in 1938 and he predeceased her in
2000. Together they shared a wonderful life. In earlier years, Edith was
employed at the Eclipse, Iszard's Department Store and Red & White Grocery
Store. She was well known in the area as a gifted cake decorator and ran a
successful business for many years.
Surviving is her family, a daughter, Sandra (Milton) Garlock, GA; a
son-in-law, John Hrusovsky, Bethlehem, PA; grandchildren, great grandchildren,
nieces and nephews including a special niece and friend, Cheryl (Joel) Combs,
Pine City.
In addition to her parents and husband Edith was predeceased by her beloved
daughter, Katherine Hrusovsky last week; her brother, Arthur Cadek Jr. and a
grandson, Russell Sawyer.

"Slim"
A longtime Elmira resident of the Northside passed away, Thursday evening,
October, 23, 2008 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility where he had been
receiving care at the age of 83.
Born on February 8, 1925 in Elmira, Clarence was the son of Albert &
Sussie Fields Quail. He retired from Kennedy Valve after many years of service
as a truck driver.
Well known by many by his band, "Slim Quail and the Green Mountain
Boys" He also called square dances. Slim appreciated antiques and was a
warm and caring family man who was so very proud of his son, Freddie Quail and
his auto racing. He is survived by his loving family, wife and companion of 48
years, Anna Ball Quail, Elmira; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Quail, Wellsburg;
son-in-law, Daniel Myers, Odessa: a sister-in-law, Barbara Quail, Elmira; many
grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Clarence was predeceased by his first wife,
Beatrice Orme Guest; daughter, Thelma Myers; son, Frederick Quail; brother,

Gamble. John L. "Bud"
Of Southport passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008 following a long and full
life at the age of 101.
Born on September 4, 1907 in Elmira, son of John L. & Bessie Devoe Gamble.
With a hard work ethic from a young age, Bud was a self-employed homebuilder.
He enjoyed all sports and was a loving and caring gentleman with a warm sense
of humor and wit. John was also a member of the Masons.
He served his country during WWII in the US Army and will be interred in
Woodlawn National Cemetery next to his predeceased wife, Lida Hager Gamble who
passed in 1994. Surviving are the people he loved his friend and companion,
Lydia Fagan, Southport; his daughter, Barbara Hazen, Rochester, NY
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bud was predeceased by his daughters, Joyce Backus and Carol Kerbein.

KNICKERBOCKER, Harry C.
A longtime Southside resident passed away peacefully in his home in the care
of his loving family and Southern Tier Hospice on Saturday morning, October
18, 2008 at the age of 87.
Born on June 23, 1921 in Bradford, NY, Harry was the son of the late Henry
& Belle Meade Knickerbocker. In addition to his parents he was also
predeceased by his brother, Lauren. He was employed by Hardinge Bros. Corp.
for many years until his retirement. His interests included fishing and
hunting. Harry enjoyed working around his home, maintained a meticulous lawn,
was a woodworker who made very detailed doll houses and is remembered as a
loving and supportive family man. In serving his country he was a WWII Navy
Veteran who survived Pearl Harbor and was also member of the American Legion
Clarence Oliver Post # 154, Elmira Heights.
Surviving is his beloved family, wife and companion of 27 years, Virginia

Helen, 81, a longtime resident of Elmira passed away peacefully at the Chemung
County Nursing Facility on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, where she had been
living for some time. She was born on October 4, 1927, in Uleta, FL, the
daughter of the late Claud and Flossie (McDuffie) West.
She was employed at Hallagan Manufacturing Co. in Newark NY, making furniture.
A family person, Helen made quilts for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed
puzzles and Bingo.

Beloved husband, father and friend to all
A long time resident of S. Creek Township, PA passed away Monday morning,
October 13, 2008 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age
of 79.
Born on July 26, 1929 in Troy, PA, Harold was the son of the late Harold Sr.
& Ada McKerrow Warner. A 1947 graduate of Troy High School; he married
Erma B. Lathrop on July 6, 1948 in Mansfield and celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary this past summer. Harold was employed by R.K.B. Enterprises in
Elmira for over 40 years.
His interests included, trains and steam engines and decorating their home at
Christmas time. Active in his community, Harold was a charter member of the
South Creek Volunteer Fire Department, former Building and Code Enforcement
Officer for South Creek Township, a long time member of the Mountain Laurel
Camping Club, an advocate and faithful member of the Gillett Senior Citizens
Center.

A longtime resident of the Southside passed away Saturday afternoon, October
4, 2008 at her home following an illness in the care of her loving family.
Mary was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, James DeRico, together
they raised a loving and caring family. Mary treasured her life she spent with
James. Mary was also predeceased by grandsons, Jamie and Mathew; mother and
father, Harold & Gladys Miller; brothers, Frank and Fred Miller; several
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; great aunt and uncle, Chuck & Eleanor
Huntly; and her son-in-law, Ron Dallas.
Mary was a member of Southside Baptist Church where she attended for many
years. She was employed by the Remington-Rand until meeting her husband Jim
and starting a family. Mary was a loving wife and mother. She was a Brownie
and Girl Scout Leader at Riverside School and "Best Mom Chauffeur in
Town"
She is survived by her children, James DeRico, Gladys DeRico and Mary Ellen
Dallas all of Elmira; and her "adopted" daughter, Sharon Haner;

Lois was born on September 18, 1945 daughter of Nyal & Naomi Hendrix
Barber I. Lois married Michael Losinger on June 21, 1973 in Millerton. She
held an Associates Degree in Business from Corning Community College, did tax
preparation and bookkeeping. As a homemaker, she made a warm and comfortable
home for her family and several foster children. Lois' interests included
bowling, crocheting and family times. Her service to the Lord included being
active in Women's Ministries and Missions within the Millerton Wesleyan Church
where she was a member. She also served as the Cradle Roll Director and Church
Historian.
Lois is survived by her loving family, husband and companion of 35 years,
Michael Losinger Sr., Millerton, PA; son, Michael (Ashley) Losinger Jr.,
Millerton, PA; daughter, Michele (Roland) Hostrander, Cortland, NY;

QUAIL, Frederick C.
"Freddie"
A long time resident of our community "finished the race" and passed
on peacefully, Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at his home with his loving
family by his side two days before his 65th birthday.
Born on September 12, 1943 in Elmira, Freddie was the son of Clarence &
Beatrice Orme Quail. At an early age he developed a passion for racing and the
life long friendships that came with the sport. Remembered by many as the
Orange # 40 Stock Car at the Chemung Speedrome, Freddie was the High Point
Champion in 1974. He was also well known at that time, at Shangri-La Speedway.
He was a member of the Tioga Motor Sports Hall of Fame and the Chemung Valley
Street Rods. Freddie was employed by Chemung County Solid Waste as a truck
driver retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. He was a communicant of
Sts. Peter & Paul's Church, A loving and supportive family man, he
treasured the memories he made with his many friends who held a special place
in his kind heart.

WRAY, NELSON E
66 of Mosherville PA, born May 12, 1942 passed away, September 7, 2008 in his
home, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the loving husband of
Lillian M. "Sue" Wray. Born in Baltimore, MD, He Moved to Lewistown,
PA, then to Pottstown, PA, and finally coming to rest in Mosherville PA. He
started working for the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Welfare at
Pennhurst Center for the Mentally Retarded in Spring City, PA, in the early
1960's as a laundry worker. Later he became a manager who was responsible for
overseeing the laundry operation, dietary and building services. In the late
1980's he became the manager of Facility Maintenance and Operations until he
retired from the state. Nelson and Sue moved to Mosherville where they then
built their dream home, where they lived life to the fullest for the last 19
years. He then went back to work doing maintenance for One Hour Techni-cleaners
in Horseheads NY, he then moved to Ares / Electrolux to repair vacuum
cleaners, where he worked until December of 2007 when he was diagnosed.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, sports, and his latest love, NASCAR. Nelson
was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He was
predeceased by his father, Gerald Vincent Wray. Survived by his wife, Lillian
(Boronski) Wray; his mother, Arlene Marie (Renninger) Wray; 6 children, Brady
Wray, Amy Sload, Michelle Giangiacomo (Steve), Brad Eckenrode, Brooke Raser
(Jen), and Mandi Pullen; 12 grandchildren, Olivia Sload, Troy Large, Jordan
Large, Stephen Giangiacomo, Lee Raser, Ken Raser, Brittney Raser, Danielle
Bagnall, Brian Bagnall, Mark Pullen, Michael Pullen, and Nancy Pullen; 5

the daughter of Leslie & Anna Lewis Ameigh. She married John Ralph Tanner
on March 30, 1956 and he predeceased her on November 12, 2002. Together they
operated Tanner Dairy Farm which has been in operation for over 100 years.
They dedicated their lives to hard work and provided a wonderful home to raise

Miller, Helen I.
A long time resident of Christian Hollow Rd. passed peacefully at Broad Acres
Health and Rehabilitation Facility, Wellsboro, Monday morning, September 1,
2008 where she had been receiving care at the age of 87.
Born on June 30, 1921 in Bentley Creek, PA; Helen was the daughter of Horace
& Loretta Snyder Cilly. She was married to Darwin Miller in 1941 and he
predeceased her in 1989. Helen was a homemaker, she enjoyed reading, and
provided a comfortable home. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Franklin St.
Church.
Surviving is her loving family, a son, M. Darwin (Carol) Miller, West Elmira;
4 grandchildren, Barry Miller, Shawna (Rick) Comfort, Beth (Dave) Hodge and
Aaron Miller; 2 great grandchildren, Adam Comfort and Tyler Sparling; a
sister, Lucille Dunn, Elmira; a brother, Armin (Betty) Silley, Montour Falls;
nieces, nephews and family friends who will be received at Caywood's Funeral
Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport on Thursday afternoon, September
4, 2008 between the hours of 3-5 p.m. Funeral services will follow the time of
visitation at 5:15 p.m. with committal prayers in the Gardens. Burial will
take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at her families convenience. In
addition to her parents and husband, Helen was predeceased by her brother,
Eugene Silley who gave his life for his country duirng WWII.
Phielix, Nancy Ann Housnick
Of Southport passed away Saturday, August 30, 2008 following a brief illness
at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester with her loving family at her side from
complications due to Leukemia.
Born on May 22, 1938 in Corning, NY; Nancy was the daughter of the late
Sampson & Leah Fish Housnick. She married Francis E. Phielix on May 31,
1958 in St. Charles Borromeo Church, Elmira Heights. Nancy was employed by the
Elmira Psychiatric Center for over 10 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her
many interests including caring for her home, taking road trips with her
friends, and dinning out.
Surviving is her husband and best friend, Francis Phielix, Pine City; their
children,
Carol J. Wiesner, Southport; Debra (Shawn) Roe, Corning; Michael (Patty Smith)
Phielix, Horseheads; Sherry (Anthony) Michalko, Horsheads; 5 grandchildren,
Aaron Wiesner, Jason (Amanda Rivera) Wiesner, Nicholas J. Willis, Matthew and
Stacy Michalko; and a great granddaughter, Aaliyah Linn Wiesner; life long
friends, Ellie White, Kathryn Perrault and Susan Brundage along with Nancy's
canine companion, "Taco". In addtion to her parents, she was
predeceased by her son-in-law, Joe Wiesner.

Campbell, Aurelia B.
Passed away at Bethany Manor on Wednesday morning, August 27, 2008 following
an illness.
Born here in Southport, August 19, 1914, she was the daughter of George &
Gertrude Merriam Bowen. She is survived by her devoted daughter and
son-in-law, Janet & Carl Bliss, Elmira; as well as three grandchildren,
Kevin Bliss, Elmira; Heather Campbell, Elmira; and Brett (Tracey) Campbell,
Savannah, GA; great granddaughters, Emma and Lexi Campbell; several cousins,
including Beatrice McCue and Phyllis Robinson; former daughters-in-law, Sylvia
Baxter and Pam Campbell; a nephew, Glen & Barbara Campbell along with a
community of caring and cherished friends, including Yvonne & Michael
Bevilacqua.
In addition to her parents, Aurelia was predeceased by her husband, Archie
Campbell in 1979; a son, David in 2005; sisters, Arthamese Denny in 1982; and
Beulah Bowen in 1998.
Her passing leaves a great void in the lives of her family members, her
friends and neighbors. She was the matriarch of Christian Hollow, which has
now lost its historical compass. A women of extraordinary perception,
understanding and memory, she kept track of events throughout her community. A
visit to her home would be full of knowledge and history, where she would
share stories and photographs. A longtime member of the former Centenary
United Methodist Church, now New Beginnings Church, Aurelia influenced young
lives as a Sunday School Teacher. She was active in the Southport and Ashland
Historical Societies. Aurelia loved her home and the hills that surrounded her
land.

Interment will take place at the families convenience in Woodlawn Cemetery,
Elmira. A special thank you to Dr. Greenburg and the staff of Bethany Manor
for their care and concern during her final days. Aurelia was very civic
minded and respectful of New Beginnings Church, the American Cancer Society,
Chemung County SPCA and the Southport and Ashlkand Historical Society's.
Doane, Delores
Age 91, surrounded by her loving family, Delores was called home to be with
her Lord on Monday August 25, 2008, in St. Joseph's Skilled Nursing Facility.
Until recently Delores resided on South Ave. in Elmira.
She was predeceased by her parents, Herman R. & Leah G. Austin Dial,
revered sons, Terrance Skoreski, Dial Skoreski and her beloved daughter,
Candace Skoreski.
Surviving is her loving family, daughter, Gloria & Willie Crumb Pine City;
son, Kurt Skorczewski, Elmira; grandchildren, David Crumb, Horseheads; Delores
(Anthony) Crumb Negri, Elmira; Darceille (Marty) Mucci, Fairport; Debra
(Robert) Quigley, Gladwyne, PA; Kerry (Julian) Carswell, Colorado Springs, CO;
seven much loved great-grandchildren, Nick and Brent Mucci, Alexander Crumb,
Andrew and Lola Quigley, Dakota Glosser and Olivia Carswell; niece, Joanne
(Jack) Craft, Bradford; and daughter-in-law, Sheila Skoreski, Corning.
During the war she was employed as a factory worker at the Eclipse Machine
Company.
Delores graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mansfield State Teachers College in
1955.
Having a high regard for the importance of education, she began her career as
a kindergarten teacher in Wellsboro, PA after which she moved to Corning and
taught at the Corning School District until her retirement. Devoted to her
family, she looked forward to family gatherings. Since Delores was severely
limited physically, she welcomed every opportunity to play card and word games
with her family and friends.
Her services will be handled privately at the families convenience and she
will interred in the Mainesburg Cemetery, Mainesburg, PA.

"Eldie"
A longtime resident of Elmira passed away Monday, August 18, 2008 at his home.
Born on August 6, 1925 in Elmira Heights, Eldon was the son of Leon &
Winifred Walker Doane. He was married to Marcella Mault Doane for over 50
years until her passing in 1998. Together they provided a wonderful home for
friends and family to gather. "Eldie's" interests included
woodworking and he was a Freelance Artist. He was employed for 38 years by
Thatcher Glass as a machinist. In serving his country, "Eldie" was a
WWII Navy Veteran who served in the South Pacific, serving on two separate PT
Boats. He was a member of the Clarence Oliver Legion Post # 154 of Elmira
Heights.
Surviving is Sandra (Joseph) Slavin, Elmira for whom he cared for like a
daughter; a granddaughter, Missy (Todd) Campbell, San Diego, CA; a loving
nephew, Archie (Linda) Sturch, Southport; a special cousin, Lynn (Janet) Doane,
Horseheads; several nieces and nephews along with his feathered friend,
"Barney". In addition to his parents and beloved Marcella, "Eldie"
was predeceased by his brothers, Marcelus "Tutt" Doane and Robert
Doane.

McQuay, Betty
Age 76 of Elmira passed away at her home, the day before her 77th birthday.
Born August 19, 1931 in Bradford County, PA. She was the daughter of Avery
& Pauline Jones Edsell. She married Audett W. McQuay on August 14, 1953,
who predeceased her on March 5, 2008 after 54 years of marriage. She retired
from Elmira Stamping after many years of service. Betty is survived by a
daughter and son-in-law, Brenda & Rodney May, Elmira; a son and
daughter-in-law, Lynn & Audrey McQuay, Ten Mile, TN; three granddaughters,
Michele Miles and Amanda Miles of Elmira and Jennifer McQuay, TN; her beloved
great grandson, Nicholas Amentler, who brought her immeasurable joy during her
last months; sisters, Norine Jenner, Halstead, PA; Janice (Thomas) Dlugosh,
Palmyra, NY; and Wanda (Ralph) Depue, Great Bend, PA; a brother, Jim Edsell,
Muncy, PA; several nieces, nephews and many family friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was predeceased by brothers,
Clarence Edsell and Clair Edsell and a sister, Grace Brown.
It was Betty's wish there be no calling hours or services. Those wishing may
make memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Assoc. in her memory or the
American Cancer Society in her husbands' memory.

"Anne"
A long time resident of Wellsburg, NY went home to be with the Lord, Thursday
evening, August 14, 2008 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility where she had
been receiving care.
Born on July 18, 1922 in Vestal Center, NY Anne was the daughter of Collins
& Ruth Nevel Abbey. She married John E. Dean on June 6, 1940 in Binghamton
and they had just celebrated their 68th anniversary. Together they raised a
close and loving family who survive. Children, John A. (Cynthia) Dean,
Mesquite, TX; Thomas G. Sr. (Shirley) Dean, Wellsburg, NY; David L. (Christy)
Dean, El Cajon, CA; Ruthanne C. (Joseph Jr.) Doucette, Hingham, MA;
Six grandchildren, six great grandchildren; a sister, Barbara (Willard) Davis,
Mechanicsburg, PA; a brother, Donald (Audrey) Abbey, Binghamton, NY; along
with several nieces and nephews.
A born again Christian, Anne possessed a strong faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ. She attended Bentley Creek Baptist Church. She enjoyed caring for her
home and always made visitors feel welcome with a warm smile and wonderful
cooking.

Shaw, Kami Lynn
A much loved friend to many of Walnut St. Elmira passed away Friday, August 1,
2008 at the age of 26.
Kami was born on April 22, 1982 in Elmira and was employed by McDonald's
Restaurant and Anchor Glass. She loved music and was a well known Disc Jockey
at Angles Ultimate Dance Club and Club Chill. She was predeceased by her
loving mother, Debra Elliott and her grandmother, Marcia Elliott. Surviving is
her father, Duane Shaw of Altman, NY; her grandmother, Delores Shaw of Bath,
NY a grandfather, Edward Elliott of Horseheads; several aunts and uncles
including, Dale (Cheryl) Elliott of Horseheads; and cousins along with her
many close and cherished friends.

"LC"
A longtime resident of the Southport community passed away, Sunday evening,
August 3, 2008 at the at the age of 88 following a long-term illness.
Born on August 24, 1919 in Columbia Cross Roads, PA. Jr. was the son of Lloyd
Sr. & Martha Brace Wolfe. He married Helene Robakoski on November 29, 1941
in Blossburg, PA. Lloyd a.k.a. "LC" was well known local contractor
who operated LC Wolfe Contractors Inc. for many years and later operated
D&L Leasing. He is remembered as a wonderful father and provider who
always worked hard to provide for his family. Lloyd was a sociable man who
enjoyed friends and family
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Helene Robakoski Wolfe;

Entered this world on January 29, 2005, touched many lives, brought laughter
and now leaves a wonderful memory when he left on August 4, 2008 at the age of
3.

Caywood, Arthur L.
A longtime resident of South Broadway, Wellsburg, NY went home to be with the
Lord on Monday morning, May 22, 2006 peacefully in the home he built fifty six
years ago within the care of his family, wonderful friends and Southern Tier
Hospice at the age of 86. Art was born in Elmira on March 14, 1920, son of
Hazel MacDougal Caywood. He learned at an early age the importance of hard
work as he left school to help support his mother and siblings. He worked on a
farm in Himrod through his teen years. Art married Alice Montene Holland on
August 30, 1941 in Harrison Valley, PA. In honor of his brother, James E.
Caywood who was killed in Italy during WWII, Arthur joined the United States
Navy. While in service, his ship came under enemy fire and several of his
comrades lost their lives. Following the war, he returned home to raise a
family. A skilled carpenter, he built several homes in the area. He was well
known within his trade as a Tool & Die Maker. A quiet unassuming
gentlemen, Art found enjoyment in family outings, traveling to Virginia,
dining out, quiet afternoons at the lake and most especially a long day of
golf with his buddies at the Mark Twain Golf Course. He was proud of his
family and always encouraged us to do better. His hard work and sacrifices
made it possible for his family to have an easier life than he had growing up.
Surviving is his loving family, including his wife of 65 years, Alice Montene
Holland Caywood; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannette & Thomas Congdon,
Pine City; Sheila & Bo Jennings Fink, Strausburg, VA; a son, James Caywood,
Southport; four grandchildren, Rebecca & Dave Davis, Lisa & James Epp,
Scott Congdon, and Michael Fink; seven great grandchildren, Ashton Davis,
Rachel, Stephen, Daniel, Nathan and Elizabeth Epp and Brooke Congdon Binford;
a sister, Mary Caywood Rice, Elmira Heights; sisters-in-law, Betty Morgan,
Millport and Edna Mascho, Horseheads; several nieces, nephews and his church
family at Fassett Baptist, along with many cherished family friends and the
companion he had made in his little dog "Corky".
In addition to his mother, Hazel, and his brother, James, Art was also
predeceased by his brother, Harold Morgan, and his sister, Joyce Fielder.

Bennett, Helen
A long time resident of the Southport community was reunited with her beloved
Richard following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, January 13,
2005 peacefully in their home.
Helen was a Private Duty Nurse and cared for many area families during an
illness or through their elderly years. Some of her patients she served for
many years. In later years she brought comfort to countless families in her
service to Caywood's. She made families feel at home and assured each one
their needs would be cared for, and did it with the outmost grace, style and
class.
Helen's many interest included dinning out at her favorite local restaurants,
walking countless miles in her community, making sure her friends never did
with out, and spending time with the love of her life, Richard Bennett until
his passing in 1994.
Helen is survived be a community of close friends who cherished having her in
our lives. We love you Helen and will never forget the imprint you have left
on our hearts. |
