Kelley, Wayne V.
A longtime resident of Elmira passed away Fri. Feb. 3, 2012 at the Robert
Packer Hospital following an illness at the age of 78.
Born on Oct. 18, 1933 in Canton, PA; Wayne was the son of the late Barney
& Myrtie Heath Kelley. In service to his country, Wayne enlisted in the US
Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Kennedy Valve
for over 35 years until his retirement. After retiring he was employed at
various companies as a security officer. His interests included family times,
camping, fishing, bowling and enjoyed a good John Wayne movie.
He married Jacquelyn Slingerland Swingle in 1972, she predeceased him in 2001.
Wayne was the last of seven siblings and also predeceased by a daughter,
Marilyn Kelley. Surviving is his loving family, children, Anthony (Mindy)
Kelley, Karyn Manwaring, Kathy (Robert) Woodruff, all of Elmira;
stepchildren, Bettie (Clinton) Heasley, Billie (Charles) Bixby, Beth (David)
Watkins, William (Cheryl) Swingle; many grandchildren, great grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.

1126 Broadway, Southport on Tues. evening Feb 7, 2012 between the hours of 6-8
p.m. and again on Wed. morning 9-11 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11
a.m. with interment in Woodlawn National Cemetery where full military honors
will be accorded Mr. Kelley.

Miller, Elizabeth "Betty"
A longtime resident of the Pine City community passed away on Sun. Jan. 22,
2012 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility following declining health.
Born on July 2, 1927 in Southport, Betty was the daughter of the late Richard
& Clara Snyder Loomis.
She married Ansel E. Miller on September 7, 1947 at the Webb Mills United
Methodist Church. She worked with him for many years at their family business,
Pine City Farm Equipment. Her interests included caning chairs, taking bus
trips with the Southport Seniors and Polka Dancing with Ansel. Above all she
enjoyed being a homemaker and caring for her family.
Betty was a member of the Pennsylvania Ave. United Methodist Church
Surviving is her loving family, children, Stephen (Linda) Miller, Troy, PA;
Randy Miller, Raeford, NC; and Nancy (James) Daum, Pine City; seven
grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, many family
friends; sisters-in-law, Janet and Irene Snyder; brothers-in-law, Harry and
Alfred Miller.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ansel
in 2010; her brothers, Fred, Richard "Dick" and Jackie Snyder.

Funeral services will follow the visitation at 8:15 pm. Betty will be interred in the

King, Rosemary,
Of Southport, passed away Sun., Jan. 22, 2012 at the Chemung County Nursing
Facility following declining health at the age of 82.
Born on Dec. 27, 1929 in Binghamton, Rosemary was the daughter of the late
Earl Bowman & Violet Davis Sydock. She was employed for many years at
Trayer Products as a machine operator. She married Peter King on June 26, 1971
in Elmira. A devoted homemaker, Rosemary enjoyed crafts, knitting, sewing and
raising her large family of ten children. Surviving is her loving husband of
40 years, Peter King, Southport; children, Linda Diann Sheets, Edward Lee
(Gale) Sheets, Suzanne Marie Christian, Sherry Ann Sheets, Penny Mae (Alvin)
Roberts, Sandra Karen Coleman, Victoria Lynn (William) Payne, Paula Kay (Al)
Durgin, Brenda Joyce Sheets, and Melissa Ann Perry all of Elmira;
brothers-in-law, John (Barb) King, Pine City; Paul (Delores) King, Pine City;
and David (Edna) King, Rochester; many grandchildren, great grandchildren,
great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Rosemary was predeceased by her sisters, Wanda
Bowman and Virginia Wieczorek; sons-in-law, Rocky Coleman and Richard Durgin.

Tallis, Muriel Jean
A longtime resident of Pine City passed away Mon. Jan. 16, 2012 at the Chemung
County Nursing Facility following declining health at the age of 85.
Born on August 8, 1926 in Elmira, daughter of the late, Walter & Ruth
Beardsley Fritchley. She was predeceased by her beloved husband John R. Tallis
Sr. on Nov. 23, 2011. A Registered Nurse, Jean was employed first at the Arnot
Ogden Hospital where she received her nurses training and later for Dr. Edward
J, Grandt MD before her retirement. A homemaker, Jean was a loving and caring
wife and mother to her family. She was a member of first Baptist Church in
Elmira.
Surviving is her loving family, children, John Jr. (Theresa) Tallis,
Horseheads; Karen (Daniel) Robbins, Pine City; Greg (Jane) Tallis, Cary, NC;
Kathy (Gerry) Warner, Southport; grandchildren, Scott and Todd MacIntosh,

Payne, Marian Joyce (Wellman)
Marian Joyce (Wellman) Payne went home to be with the Lord on Wed. Jan. 11,
2012. She passed away peacefully at home and will be lovingly remembered and
missed by family and friends. Marian was born in Jamestown, NY, to Edna (Warn)
& Gerald Wellman. Marian graduated from Southside High School in 1952. She
served as a Sunday School teacher of women and children, pianist, organist,
and church clerk at the Maple Avenue Baptist Church, of which she was a
charter member and where she has been a faithful member for over 40 years. She
also taught a ladies' Bible study in her home. Marian was employed at the
Eclipse Division of the Bendix Corporation and then worked at home for a
number of years before serving at the Star-Gazette as a computer operator and
programmer until her retirement. Marian (known to some as Joyce) will be
remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She is
survived by her husband, Melvin Ray Payne of Elmira, to whom she was married
for 56 years, and by her siblings, Clarence "Kelly" Wellman, Violet
& (Rolland) Nielsen, and Elsie & (Norman) Rock. She is also survived
by five of her children, Nancy & (Douglas) Richardson, Karen & (James)
Petroski, Kathy & (Lawrence) Flood, Stephen & (Joanne) Payne, and
Glenn & (Laurie) Payne; sixteen grandchildren, Paul & (Clairissa)
Richardson, David & (Melanie) Richardson, Nathan & Katrina Petroski,
Melissa & (Nathan) Keller, Diane Petroski, Christen Richardson, Karalynn
Payne, Kenneth Petroski, Matthew Richardson, Jeremiah Payne, Aaron Richardson,

Drake, Jr., Winfield S. "Sonny"
Of Pine City, NY entered eternal life with our Lord Jesus Christ Tuesday, Jan.
3, 2012 following a valiant and persevering battle with cancer at the age of
82. Born in Elmira on February 24, 1929, Sonny was the son of the late
Winfield S. & Naomi Rockwell Drake, Sr. Sonny was a true gentleman. His
steady, gentle presence brought comfort to many and honor to his family. At
the age of 12, Sonny started working to support his family after the untimely
death of his father. Dedicated to his country, he enlisted in the US Army
during the Korean Conflict then worked for New York Telephone Company for 42
years up until his retirement. Sonny's great loves in life were his faith, his
family and Keuka Lake. A dedicated family man, Sonny was creative, logical and
resourceful. His many interests inspired a love of learning in his children
and grandchildren. He had a lifelong, abiding fondness for Keuka Lake, living
and vacationing there for over 65 years of his life. He also enjoyed
vacationing in California, especially Coronado, CA. He was a member of the
Masonic Lodge #95 for over 50 years, American Legion Post #154 in Elmira
Heights and a member of the Downtown Health Club. He was a long-time member
and served as the past President and Vice President of TELCO Federal Credit
Union. Sonny was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Drake. Surviving is his
loving family, wife and unwaveringly devoted soul mate of 49 years, Janice
Antrim Drake, Pine City, NY; children, Winfield Scott (MaryBeth) Drake, III
with daughter Taylor Elise, Elmira, NY; Jennifer Drake (Lawrence) Gacka with

Westervelt, Richard E. "Dick"
Formerly of Bird Creek Rd. Webb Mills, currently of Horseheads passed away
Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 following declining health at the age of 75.
Born Elmira in on Dec. 4, 1936, Dick was the son of the late, Edward &
Anna Brudnik Westervelt. Dick graduated from Corning Community College with a
Methods Engineering Degree. He was employed by Hillard Corp. for many years
until his retirement. Dedicated to his country, Dick was enlisted in the US
Marines following the Korean Conflict. A dedicated family man, Dick enjoyed
woodworking, fishing, and attending family sporting events. He was a
communicant of St. Mary's Church in Elmira.

Mastronardi, Roby N.
Of Southport passed away tragically from a motorcycle accident on Fri. Dec 23,
2011 at the age of 40. Born on Nov. 8, 1971 in Elmira, Roby was the loving
son of Nicolas & Judith Loveless Mastronardi. Roby worked hand in hand
with his father Nick in the family business, Loveless Blacktopping. He enjoyed
cycling, snowboarding and spending time with his four legged friends Zoey and
Freddie. Roby was a great uncle to Hunter, Talon and Zachary. A master
craftsman, Roby excelled at any trade he was called upon to do from building
homes to hanging his mom's artwork and pictures.

Of Southport, passed away Sun. Dec 11, 2011 following declining health at the
age of 60.

Wilson; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of the Southport community passed away Fri. evening, Dec.
9, 2011 at St. Joseph's Hospital following declining health at the age of 85.
Born on Oct. 12, 1926 in Southport, Kenny was the son of the late, A. Henning
& Anna M. Johnson Bergh. He married Margaret Kaul on Aug. 9, 1952 in
Elmira Heights. Kenny was very active in the community and well known for his
involvement with H. H. & K. Bergh Inc. on Broadway which he opened with
his brothers in 1946 and he cooperated till his retirement in 1992. He was an
active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Southport Business Assoc. and
AARP. He could often be seen walking through the neighborhood with Margaret
visiting with their neighbors and was a regular at Town Hall meetings. Kenny
loved automobiles and enjoyed collecting the classics. He was a member of the
Antique Automobile Car Club of America, the Plymouth and Chevy Clubs as well.
In addition to his autos he loved boating on Keuka Lake in his Chris Craft
Boat.
Surviving is his loving wife and companion, Margaret Kaul Berg, Southport;
sisters-in-law, Viola Bergh and Constance Bergh, Southport; loving nieces and
nephews.
In addition to his parents, Kenny was predeceased by his sisters, Helen (Ross)

A longtime Southside resident formerly of Erie St. passed away peacefully,
Wed. evening, Dec. 7, 2011 at the age of 92. Most recently Berneta was a
resident at Bethany Manor in Horseheads, NY.
Born on Feb. 28, 1919 in Green Grove, WI, Berneta was the daughter of the late
Walter & Meta Schoezel Bahn. Berneta was very active throughout her life.
She enjoyed gardening, playing Euchre, dancing, was a member of the American
Legion, Eagles Club and the Elmira Moose Club. She was devoted to being a
loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker. She is survived by her loving
children, Michael (Sarah) Knickerbocker, Colchester, CT; Sandra Jean (James)
Langstine, Punta Gorda, FL; Howard (Sue) Knickerbocker, Elmira; Scott
(Celeste) Knickerbocker, Pine City; grandchildren, Bryan, Matthew, Melissa and
Sara Knickerbocker, Aiden and Russell Strickland, William, Sean and Jason
(Jessica) Langstine, Howard (Cristy) and Derek (Jennifer) Knickerbocker, Amy
(Brian) Kozemko, Andrew (Brandi) Jones and Katelyn Knickerbocker along with
several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was also predeceased by her former husband
father of her children, Harry Knickerbocker in 2008, brother, Chester Bahn and

VanHouten, Harry R.
A lifelong resident of Elmira, passed away Fri. Dec. 2, 2011 at Elcor Health
Services following declining health at the age of 64.
Born on Sept. 23, 1947, Harry was the son of the late, Willis & Florence
Paulman VanHouten. He was employed by Chemung ARC for many years. He
accomplished life's daily challenges with determination and a warm smile.
Harry touched many lives with his sense of humor and his kind and caring
spirit. He enjoyed attending the Elmira Christian Center. Harry was active in
recreation, bowling and going to Pathways.
Surviving are his siblings, Lorraine (James D.) VanHorn, James (Bonnie)
VanHouten, George (Karen) VanHouten, and Wayne (Robin) VanHouten; several
nieces, nephews and friends he made while residing at the Wellsburg and Pine
City Group Homes. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother,
Richard D. VanHouten.

Hadberg, Flemming
A resident of the Southside of Elmira passed Saturday evening, November 19,
2011 at St. Joseph's Hospital following declining health at the age of 67.
Born on September 14, 1944 in Denmark, Flemming was the son of the late, Carl
& Inger Petersen Hadberg. He served in the Denmark Navy before coming to
America. A professionally trained chef, Flemming was employed by several
country clubs. Due to a massive stroke in 1989, his last employer was the
Panther Valley Country Club in Allamuchy, NJ. He married Margaret Rose
Jennings in 1967 in NYC before coming to Elmira in 1984. He attended Bethany
Lutheran Church and enjoyed flying as a trained pilot. Flemming enjoyed trips
to Florida.
Surviving is his loving wife, Margaret Rose Hadberg, Elmira; son, Neil William
Hadberg, Williamsburg, VA; grandson, Hunter Hadberg; brother, Erik Hadberg,
Denmark; niece, Emma; nephew, Christopher; cousin, Birgit with sons, Erik and
Christian; and cherished family friends.
A memorial service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 256 S. Walnut St.
Elmira on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 2 p.m.
Tallis, John R. Sr.
A longtime resident of Pine City passed away Wednesday morning, November 23,
2011 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility following declining health at the
age of 84.
Born on August 31, 1927 son of the late, John H. & Atlanta B. Burnham
Tallis, John served in the US Navy and was employed by Howard's Express for
many years as a salesman. He enjoyed collecting and selling antiques and was
the proprietor of Woodshed Antiques in Pine City. John was a member of first
Baptist Church in Elmira and a Boy Scout leader for many years.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Jean Fritchley Tallis;
children, John Jr. (Theresa) Tallis, Horseheads; Karen (Daniel) Robbins, Pine
City; Greg (Jane) Tallis, Cary, NC; Kathy (Gerry) Warner, Southport;

Ford, Doris Beechey
A longtime member of the Fassett, PA community, went home to be with the Lord
on Sunday morning, November 6, 2011. Born on May 25, 1925 in Blossburg, PA,
Doris was the daughter of the late William and Ada Kempfer Beechey. She was a
graduate of Troy High School and the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing. After many
years of service as a caring and compassionate ICU nurse, Doris retired from
The Arnot Ogden Medical Center in 1989 and since that time had volunteered at
the Arnot and also at the Falck Cancer Center. Doris was an active member of
the Fassett Baptist Church. In later years, she spent countless hours making
beautiful cards for people when it was difficult for her to visit in person.
Those very special cards were treasured by many. Doris is survived by her
loving husband and companion, Orley Ford; their children, Kathy (Kate)
McKenzie, Elmira; Denny Ford, Fassett, PA; daughter-in-law, Maryellen Ford,
AL; grandchildren, Michele Kotch, Elizabeth Manzella, Christina Ford and
Daniel Ford; great grandsons, Jason Lawes and DeSean Poole; sister-in-law,
Donna Beechey; several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her
parents, Doris was predeceased by her beloved son, Tim Ford; sister, Paula
Davis; and brother, William Beechey. Doris loved her family dearly and had
many friends who she cherished. "This is just a separation period, and we
will all be together again someday in our Heavenly Home, with our Savior, and
loved ones gone before."

"Mitzi"
A longtime resident of the Horsheads community passed away, Sunday morning,
October 30, 2011 following a lengthy illness at Strong Memorial Hospital in
Rochester at the age of 54.
Born on June 22, 1957 in Inglewood, CA, Mitzi was the daughter of Robert &
Mary Maxine Pierce Sardo. She married David J. Raymond on August 4, 1984 in
Thousand Oaks, CA. They moved to Horseheads and made it their home. Mitzi
enjoyed travels to Cape Cod, road trips in the car, and entertaining family
and friends at their home.
Surviving is her loving husband and companion, David J. Raymond; beloved
Sons, David J. Raymond and Colin M. Raymond all of Horsheads; sisters, Roberta

Residing in Sayre, PA; passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at Robert Packer
Hospital following an illness at the age of 83.
Born on November 20, 1927 in Gibbsboro, NJ; Tom was the son of the late,
Thomas N. & Katherine Mackey Nicholson. He served in the United States
Navy during WWII. Tom was employed by Lederle Laboratories for many years as a
Lab Tech. His interests included hunting, fishing and family times. Tom
attended Fassett Baptist Church for several years.
Surviving is his loving family, wife of 64 years, Irene East Nicholson, Sayre,
PA; children, Thomas H. Nicholson (Cay Wilson), Groton, NY; Irene Soos,
Gillett, PA; 4 grandchildren, Thomas R. Nicholson, Jennifer Nicholson, Joseph
Soos Jr., Jami Soos-Perry; 5 great grandchildren, TJ, Chase, Jared, Kaitlyn
and Ethan; sister, Ruth Golley, NJ; nieces, nephews, Goddaughter, Marianna

Tom is preceded by his sisters, Ellen Kirchner and Grace Yearick and a

Wilber, Robert G.
A longtime resident of Lone Pine Terrace passed away on Tues., Oct. 11,
2011 following declining health at the age of 84. Born on May 5, 1927, Robert
was the son of the late, Henry & Grace Hall Wilber. He served his country
in the US Navy during WWII. Robert was employed by Met Life Insurance as a
sales manager until his retirement. His interests included traveling hunting,
fishing and playing golf. He was also the proprietor of Goff Rd. Trailer Park.
Surviving are his loving daughters, Connie & Rick Mullins, Raleigh, NC;
Karen & Dennis Freeman, N. Rose, NY; four grandchildren, Melissa Clark,
Elizabeth Roark, Andrew (Colleen) Freeman and Susie Freeman; eleven great

Wilber, TX; nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by his loving wife of
56 years, Phyllis Duggan Wilber on Dec. 24, 2003 and his grandson, Kevin

Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 at 1 pm. Interment will take place in the Tioga Point

A longtime resident of the Fassett, PA community passed away Tuesday, October
25, 2011 at Robert Packer Hospital where he had been receiving care at the age
of 72.
Born on February 23, 1939 in Elmira son of the late William & Ida Hodge
Coats.
He was employed for many years by W. M. Spiegel & Sons, Elmira,
Allen's interests included fishing, hunting and welding.

Bruce Tillotson of Elmira NY and Fort Pierce, FL passed away very suddenly at
the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center on Thursday evening, September 15, 2011. He was
born on July 29, 1947 in Sayre, PA to Betty Tillotson and the late, William
Tillotson. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Roxie (Tobey)
Tillotson with whom he shared 33 wonderful years of marriage, and his mother,
Betty Tillotson of Chemung, NY.
He was predeceased by his father, Bill Tillotson; grandparents, Art &
Helen Rinebold; aunt and uncles, Phyllis & Bill Rutledge, Art Rinebold;
paternal grandparents, Paul & Maude Tillotson; and father-in-law, Jack
Tobey.
He is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins, including, JoEllen Robinson
and Roger Kleinfield, Horseheads, NY; Naomi Rinebold, Elmira, NY; Robert &
Birdie Shipman, Waverly, NY; Lillian Rinebold, Meredin, CT; and special

Bruce and Roxie were the former proprietors of the Grain Bin in Southport. He
retired from Cayuga Medical Center and was enjoying his retirement when he was
taken ill. He loved his home in Florida and was looking forward to spending
his second winter there. He was an avid hunter, loved the game of golf and
will be missed by his golfing buddies, Tom Savino, Lou Lovecchio and Terry
Holmes. Bruce was a fun-loving, wonderful friend to many, and he will be
missed by all his friends and former co-workers at Cayuga Medical Center.

A longtime resident of the Horseheads community, passed away Thursday evening,
September 15, 2011 at home with her loving family by her side at the age of
67.
Born on November 16, 1943 in Elmira, Judy was the daughter of the late William
P. & Lucille Pack Falls. She married Antonio L. "Tony" Sills in
1979. Judy was the proprietor of Marians Gifts & Ceramics, Southport where
she enjoyed caring for her customers and meeting new people within the
community. "Judy's family and very special ceramic family will continue
to operate her store." She was a loving and devoted mother to her family
who survive, husband of 32 years, Tony Sills, Horseheads; son, William J.
(Kathy) Quail, KY with their children, Colin and Alex; daughter, Sheri Quail-Trombetta,
Elmira with her sons, Patrick and Mathew; stepson, Antonio L. (Renee) Sills
II, Lancaster, PA; stepson, Jason (Robin) Sills, Lancaster, PA with their
daughter, Mia; brother, Richard Falls, Elmira; nieces, nephews and a special
niece, Debbie Smith.

was married to Theodore K. Burrows until his passing in 1972. She was employed
by the Robert Packer Hospital for over 22 years until her retirement. A
homemaker, Betty was devoted to her family and held a special place in her
heart for animals.

grandsons, Theodore N. and Nathan R. Burrows and Christopher Casler;

daughter of the late, Harvey E. & Dorothy G. Lewis Davenport. She was a
factory worker and waitress who enjoyed babysitting, cooking and crocheting.

Sullivan, SGM Lawrence P.
Age 54, of Madison, Alabama, died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Arnot Ogden
Medical Center due to complications from congestive heart failure. He was in
Elmira to visit family. Born October 5, 1956, in Elmira, to the late Edward P.
and Marlene J. Sullivan, "Larry" is survived by his wife of 33
years, Yong (Jeannie), two sons, Sean and Steven, of Madison, Alabama and
canine companion "Booger"; siblings Deborah Beckhorn, Elmira;
Michael (Margaret) Sullivan, Mesa, AZ; Denise Sullivan, Cohoes, NY; and Laurie
(Jay) Hansen, Elmira; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Larry was
a 1974 graduate of Southside High School and an Eagle Scout. In service to his
country, he enlisted in the United States Army after graduation, where he rose
to the rank of Sergeants Major and retired after a decorated 30 year military
career. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed coaching his two sons in sports,
and appreciated world travel and sight-seeing. He was a dedicated husband,
devoted father, loving brother, and adored uncle. His
greatest joy was in raising his two boys.

Meador, Ruth Nero Gates
78 of Cory Land Rd. Gillett, PA passed away peacefully Monday August 15, 2011
at her daughters, Cindee (Jeff) Wrays home, where she was lovingly cared for
after a long illness.
Born on January 24, 1933, Ruth was the daughter of the late William & Mary
Wood Nero. Ruth married James Gates and together they started a home for the
elderly in 1970 and continued for many years. When James passed away Ruth
worked as a waitress for Chucks Fine Foods and met her second husband, Charles
"Chuck" Meador in 1973 and together they operated, Meador's Personal
Care Home, Gillett, PA where they resided and cared for many residents
throughout the years. After Chuck passed away she continued to run the home
with the assistance of her daughter Cindee. She retired in 1993 and sold the
business to her son Bill (Ellen) Gates she continued to live with them until
she became ill and moved in with Cindee who cared for her till her death. Ruth
enjoyed collecting dolls, QVC shopping, rummage sale treasures, soap operas,
and especially her family and grandchildren.
Surviving is her loving family, children, Cynthia (Jeff) Wray, Gillett, PA;
Bill (Ellen) Gates, Gillett, PA; stepchildren, Michael (Mary Ann) Meador;

Winship. She was employed by St. Joseph's Hospital for many years as a LPN.
Ileen was a long time member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed
gardening and loved animals.

Of Southport, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 following declining health at
Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at the age of 61. Born on August 27, 1949 in
Rochester; Larry was the son of the late Connell & Rita Burcke Habecker.
He married Karen Little on January 22, 1977 in St. Mary's Church where he was
a parishioner. Larry was employed by Chemung County Dept. of Social Services
for 25 years and retired as a Senior Welfare Examiner. After his retirement he
was a substitute teacher for the Elmira and Horsheads School Districts. His
interests included gardening and he was an avid Elmira College Soaring Eagles
Hockey fan where he served on the Booster Club Board. Surviving is his loving

A longtime resident of Elmira passed away Friday, July 22, 2011 at Kindrid
Hospital, Oakdale, PA while awaiting a lung transplant at the age 62.
Born on November 17, 1948 in Jersey City, NJ son of the late Walter &
Florence Kelly Ayres. Walter was a Transit Bus Driver for many years employed
by Chemung County Transit. His passion was motorcycle riding and was active in
many local riding groups. Walt proudly served his country during the Vietnam
War in the U.S. Army.
He was a loving and devoted husband and father to his surviving family;
wife and companion of nearly 30 years, Patricia Ayres, Elmira; son, Mark

Michael & Wilma Palkovic Klenotich.
She married John Salva on September 10, 1960 in Binghamton and he predeceased
her on July 14, 2009. A homemaker, Rose Ann enjoyed sewing, crocheting,
knitting, crafting and quilting. She also was an avid "book worm"
and enjoyed the company of her many pets over the years. She was a former
communicant of Sts. Peter & Paul's Parish and most recently, St. Mary's
Parish. Rose Ann was a loving wife and a supportive mother. She is survived by
her daughters, Janel Salva, Rochester; and Karen (Kevin) Mowrey, Gloversville;
granddaughter, Lauren Rose Mowrey; sister, Velma (Ken) Peters, Stony Point;

A longtime resident of the Southport community passed away Wednesday, July 20,
2011 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center where she had been receiving care at the
age of 64 following a battle with cancer.
Born on July 19, 1947 in Elmira, daughter of the late William Jr. &
Virginia Morseman Held.
She married Edward Miele on December 2, 1967. Employed by the Elmira City
School Dist for over 30 years at Broadway, Sandy was as a teacher's aide. She
loved children and cherished the memories of her students both past and
present. Sandy was a member of the Oakwood United Methodist Church. Her many
interests included shopping, ceramics, caring for her home and family along
with her beloved pets.
She was a loving and devoted wife and mother to her surviving family; husband
and companion, Edward Miele, Southport; children, Mark (Tammy) Miele, Elmira;
Scott (Connie) Miele, Elmira; grandchildren, Brad and Joshua Snyder; brother,

Born on June 6, 1953 in Elmira, Karen was the daughter of the late, Lyle &
Edna Holland Mascho. She graduated from Horseheads High School and received
her Nursing credentials from Alfred State. Karen had a lifelong passion for
helping those in need and was employed by St. Joseph's Hospital for over 30
years; many of those years were spent in the Emergency Room. Karen interests
included gardening, crafts, flowers, the outdoors and enjoying her friends and
grandchildren. Surviving is her loving family, husband, LaRue Curren; her
children, Crystal (Patrick) Parks and Daniel Ennis; step daughter, Molly (Josh
Doran) Curren; grandchildren, Amelia Mae Parks and Ada Lou Doran; sister,

2011 at Elcor Health Services where she had been receiving care at the age of
79.
Born on August 1, 1931 in Hornell, NY daughter of the late William &
Dorotha Barber MacDougall. Mary was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, canning
vegetables, cooking and caring for her home. She was a loving and devoted wife

Of Elmira passed away Wednesday June 29, 2011 following a battle with cancer
at the age of 69. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Sheila Stewart on

Gilbert, Lester E.
Formerly of Elmira, residing in Myrtle Beach, SC passed away at his home
following declining health at the age of 80. Born on October 26, 1930 in
Elmira, Les was the son of the Late Franklin E. & Rachael A. Lattin
Gilbert. Les married Antoinette M. Mazzaraco on July 28. 1956. In serving his
country, he enlisted in the US Air force.
Les retired from Corning Inc. in 1987. He was a communicant of St. Mary's
Church, and a member of St. Andrew Church in Myrtle Beach. He was a member of
the Elmira & Myrtle Beach Elks.
He played basketball for the U.S.A.F. He pitched fast pitch softball until he
was 55 yrs. Old, and was an avid golfer.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion of 54 years, Antoinette M.

A lifelong resident of Elmira passed away Wednesday morning, June 29, 2011 at
Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at the age of 68 following a battle with cancer.
Born on October 15, 1942 in Elmira, Anna was the daughter of the late, George
W. & Marion A. Gardner Gates. She was married to Robert A. Yanowiak at St.
John's Church, in Elmira on April 20, 1963. Anna was employed by the Elmira
City School District for many years and worked in the Cafeteria in various
positions. Devoted to her home and family, she took enjoyment in quilting and
sewing.
Surviving is her loving family, husband of 48 years, Robert Yanowiak Sr.;
their children, Robert Yanowiak Jr., Lodi; Tina (Scott) Kapral, Manlius;
Christa (Randy) Nellis, Corning; Paul (Holly) Yanowiak, Rochester; five
grandchildren, Kyle, Chelsea, Devin, Caden and Seaver; brother, Vincent (Twyla)

Longtime resident of Gillett, PA and presently of Horsheads, went to be with
her Lord on Saturday morning, June 11, 2011 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center
following an illness at the age of 87.
Born on June 2, 1924 in Elmira; Emily was the daughter of the late, Frederick
& Julia Mills Seymour. She was married to Glenn L. Craig on August 28,
1941 and he predeceased her on June 18, 1991. A homemaker, her pride and joy
was providing a loving home for her family. She was an active member of the
Gillett Baptist Church involved in many activities including the Bereans.
Surviving are her loving children, Glenn A. (Gail) Craig, Melbourne, FL;
Ronald (Becky) Craig, Troy, PA; Linda (Dale) McClelland, Gillett, PA; Carolyn
Craig, Troy, PA; Darla (Neil) Moore, Horseheads; several grandchildren, great

Formerly of Cayuta, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 11, 2011 at
her Horsheads home with her loving family by her side at the age of 88.
Born on March 17, 1923 in Branchport, Martha was the daughter of the late,
Howard & Leah Corwin Turner. She married Arthur Searle on February 9, 1947
in Elmira and he predeceased her on August 6, 1999. Martha was a devoted
homemaker, who enjoyed caring for and raising her family. She was a longtime
member of Elmira First Baptist Church. She always greeted you with a warm and
kind smile.

Elmira: Age 69, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend,
passed away at home with her loving family by her side, following a long,
courageous battle with lung cancer, on Friday, June 10, 2011. Betty was born
on August 21, 1941, in Dushore, PA, daughter of the late Archie E. (1986) and
Beatrice A. Brown (1995). She is also predeceased by her infant sister, Diane
Lynn (1956) and mother-in-law, Betty Doughty (2008) and father-in-law, Frank
Doughty (1987). Betty is lovingly remembered and survived by her loving
husband of 50 years (April 15, 2011), Frank Doughty, III; children, Jacqueline
(James) Pryslak and Thomas (Dorothy) Doughty of Elmira, NY, and Timothy
(Stephanie) Doughty of Corning, NY; grandchildren, Gregory, Andrew, Joseph and
Erik Pryslak, Kelly, Kimberly, Keegan, Karter, Kaden and Kooper Doughty;
siblings, Edward Brown, Robert Brown (Jan Halstead) and Darlene (Donald) Hill,
all of Elmira, NY; brother-in-law Robert (Lori) Doughty of Corning, NY, and

Betty was a 1959 graduate of Southside High School. She was employed for many
years by Hills Department Store and as a bus aide for the Elmira City School
District. She was an avid bird watcher, animal lover, gardener, casino
gambler, cow collector, and Elmira Jackals fan. She was known for her
delicious homemade fudge and macaroni and cheese, crocheted family pillows,
and, for making special birthday cakes for her grandchildren. Betty was
caring, generous, supportive, loving and loyal. She enjoyed attending her
grandchildren's many school and social functions, going to breakfast and/or
dinner with "the girls" and shopping with "Martha". She
will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Family and friends are

2011 at the Bradford County Manor, E. Troy, PA following declining health at
the age of 76.
Born on October 30, 1934 in Elmira, Dick was the son of, Archie L. &
Catherine E. Hartman Peterson. He was employed for many years by Steve Acuto
Pontiac as the parts manager until his retirement. Among his many interests
were auto racing and collecting, gardening, woodworking and providing for his
loving family who survive.

L. Bacon Lawson. Charlie was self employed as a general contractor and
operated C.A. Lawson Builder for many years until his retirement. Always
active, he was an avid Gardner.

A former resident of the Mansfield and Fassett, PA communities, passed away
Monday evening, May 2, 2011 while residing in Dade City, FL following
declining health.
Born on September 6, 1943, Shirley was the daughter of the late Lewis &
Margaret Ely Thorpe. She married Karl Congdon on December 6, 1959 in Daggett,
PA. Together they raised a loving family. She was a member of the Fassett
Baptist Church and was well known having been employed as a clerk in several
local stores. Her interests included reading, doing crossword puzzles, and
spending time with her grandchildren when possible. She especially enjoyed
being with Karl when he was playing his drums and spending time with their
friends.

He was the proprietor of Shappee's Meat Plant and co proprietor of Pine City
Meat Market. He was a member of the Pine City Baptist Church, Pine City Vol.
Fire Dept., and Fur, Fin & Feather Sportsman's Club where he enjoyed
special times with friends. Fred was an avid sports fan who enjoyed the NY
Yankees, Penn State football, and Syracuse University football and basketball.
He played Big ball on the Pine City Team, coached and umpired Little League.
In honor of his wishes all services were handled privately at his family's
convenience and he was interred in Fitzsimmons Cemetery.

His life was tragically taken in a senseless and cowardly act of violence on
Sunday morning, May 1, 2011 at the age of 53.
Born on November 8, 1957 in Montour Falls, Billy, was the son of Edwin &
Roxann Bovaird Lewis,
Billy was well known in the area having co operated Angles for many years and
most recently operated Chill. He loved to entertain guests and went out of his
way to make new comers feel welcome. A very giving person, Billy became a
second father to many during his life. Billy was active in organizing local
events within the community.

Sunday evening, May 1, 2011 at the Absolute Care at Three Rivers at the age of
79 following a battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born on April 16, 1932 in Elmira, son of the late, Firmund Friends &
Valeda Updyke Friends-Wells. In service to his country, Glenn served in the US
Air Force. He was employed by Black & Decker, Emhart Mfg. and Powers Mfg.
for over 20 years until his retirement. He was a talented woodworker and
mechanic. Glenn enjoyed family vacations and was very proud of his John Deere
Tractor.

evening, April 28, 2011 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 92.
Born on July 24, 1918 in Bath, NY, Betty was the daughter of the late, Olin C.
& Edna C. Force Townsend. She was employed as a meat cutter at Louis J.
Lutz Market for 50 years. Betty enjoyed the outdoors, playing golf and family
times.

sister, Jean Costa, Corning; brother, Phillip Townsend, Corning; several

surviving siblings are Rosemary Davies and Steve and Charles Wright, Jr.
She leaves her children and their spouses, Lee & Joanne, Jeane Morse &
Thomas, Donald & Geri and Michael to always remember her gentle nature.
Her grandchildren, Jessica, Michael, Karrie and Jennifer were her absolute
pride and joy.
She had been active in the local Democratic Committee, delighted in rummage
sales and had enjoyed bowling. Dorothea Jeane, a lifelong resident of Elmira,
spent her retiring years enjoying her family, Bingo, crossword puzzles, and
old movies.
All services were held privately at her family's convenience and she was
interred in Sts. Peter & Paul's Cemetery.
Coletta, Althea
A long time resident of the Southside community, passed away Monday morning,
April 18, 2011 at Seneca View S.N.F. in Montour Falls, following a declining
health at the age of 94.
Born on February 25, 1917 in Elmira, Althea was the daughter of the late,
Ralph & Mary Lewis Maybee. She married James Coletta in 1935 and he
predeceased her in 1988. Althea was employed Remington Rand, FM& Howell
Co. and McDonald's Restaurant. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church for
many years. She was very devoted to her family who survive. Daughters, Mary
(Phil) Gable, Summerfiled, FL; Nancy (Ralph) Williamson, Dahlonega GA; and
Delores (Jerry) Bosley, Huntsville, AL; several grandchildren, great
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

"Bud"
A longtime resident of Millerton (Roseville), PA passed away Sunday evening,
April 17, 2011 at the Bath Veterans Nursing Home following a battle with
cancer at the age of 85.
Born on October 3, 1925 in Elmira, Bud was the son of the late, Matthew L.
& Bina Abigale Murphy Dooley. Bud served in the United States Marines
during WWII where he was a survivor of the assault of Peleliu September 15,
1944. Bud often said, "Once a Marine always a Marine". He was
employed by General Motors in Buffalo as a truck driver for many years. Always
active, Bud enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, golf and baseball. He was formerly
a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. Surviving is his loving wife, Tasa
Vlajic Dooley; children, Alice (Roy) Fassel, Diana Dooley, Ronald Dooley,
Sherry (Fred) Costantino, and Tracey Contrino; stepchildren, Rada Azinaro,
Dushanka (David) Donner, Floyd (Patricia), John (Mary Lee), David (Jean), and
Robert (Jeannie) Vlajic; sister, Mary Ellen Frawley; many grandchildren, great
grandchildren; a nephew, Jack (Patty) Frawley and his favorite cat,
"Lucky". In addition to his parents, Bud was predeceased by a

A lifelong resident of the Elmira community, passed away Friday morning, April
15, 2011 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following declining health at the age
of 79. Born on November 24, 1931 in Elmira, Leroy was the son of the late,
Claude & Edith Goodrich Tucker. He served his country for nearly 20 years
in the United States Army and Air Force. A hard working man and good provider,
Leroy was employed by the Elmira City School District for 23 years until his
retirement in 1989. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Geraldine
Faivre Tucker, Elmira; daughters, Kathy (Ray) Leigh, AR; Michele (William)
Dickinson, Pine City; grandchildren, Christopher and Megan; great
granddaughter, Celeste; sister, Shirley Redner, Elmira; sister-in-law, Peggy
Tucker, Horseheads, additional in-laws, Eugene (Phyllis) Faiver,
Elmira Heights; Beverly (Arden) Welch, Canada; James (Ruth) Faiver, Parish;

April 4, 2011 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following declining health at the
age of 87. Born on July 15, 1923 in Elmira, Pat was the daughter of the late,
Harold R. & Gladys Young Miller. A hard worker, she was employed by Moore
Business Forms for many years. A devoted homemaker and mother, She raised a
loving a caring family. Pat was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene
in Southport. Her interests included ceramics knitting and watching John Wayne
movies.

LASKARIS, Robert W.
A longtime resident of Pine City passed away peacefully on Thursday morning,
March 31, 2011 following an illness at the age of 82 while receiving care at
the Bath Veterans Hospital.
Born on April 22, 1928 in Elmira, Robert was the son of the late Louis &
Helen Waddell Laskaris. Devoted to his country, Robert was enlisted in the
United States Army for over 20 years. Civic minded, Bob was instrumental in
the restoration of the "Pop Corn Truck", the expansion of Woodlawn
National Cemetery, was involved with the Memorial Day Parade, the
beautification of Wisner Park with rose bushes, and had a passion for antique
automobiles.
Surviving family include children, special daughter, Patricia (George) Mowry,
Linda (David) Taylor, and Nancy (Peter) Parsons all of PA; special friend and
caregiver, Debbie Allen, Pine City and loving step-daughter, Barbara (James)
Hornbeck, Pine City; many grandchildren, great grandchildren
step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his wife, Gladys Laskaris
in 2008; brother, James Laskaris and a great granddaughter, Gracie.

Age 39 of Pine City passed away Sunday morning, March 27, 2011 near home as a
result of a snowmobile accident.
Born on December 15, 1971 in Elmira, Sam was the son of Gary L. & Dinah
Ravert Munson. He was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy Class of 1991and
attended SCT BOCES where he learned the trade of welding. Sam received his
Associate's Degree from Mohawk Valley Community College. He was employed by
Cameron Fabrication, Horseheads for over 16 years and most recently Courser
Inc. Big Flats as a welder.
An avid outdoorsman, Sam's interests included bow and gun hunting, riding
ATV's and snowmobiles. He was a devoted father, son, and brother.
Surviving is his loving family and many friends; daughter, Megan Munson and

Age 83 of Able 2, 398 Old Ithaca Rd. Horseheads, NY passed away Saturday
morning, March 26, 2011 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center.
Helen was born in Elmira, January 17, 1928, the daughter of the late, Albert
L. & Harriett Fitzgerald Wheeler. She was predeceased by her great niece,
Sarah Hughes in 2007. Helen is survived by her brother, Albert L. (Dolores)
Wheeler, Hammondsport; nephews, Albert L. (Cindi) Wheeler, Elmira; Michael
(Michelle) Wheeler, Colorado Springs, CO; nieces, Anne (Joe) Caruana, Elmira;

A once long time resident of Rockwell Avenue, Muriel passed away Thursday,
March 17, 2011 at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility at the age of 88.Born
on November 29, 1922 in Elmira, Muriel was the daughter of the late Carlton
and Mabel Opdyke Armstrong. In addition to her parents, Muriel was predeceased
by former husband, Ellis Grose, a sister, Betty (Charles) Edger and a brother,
Carlton Jr. (Marie) Armstrong. Surviving are her loving daughters Susan (Bill)
Davis, Pine Valley and Rebecca Sims, Charlottesville, VA; four grandchildren,
Keary Davis (Portland, OR), Todd (Amy) Davis (Wabeno, WI), Mitch (Jennifer)
Sims (Reston, VA) and Erica (Travis) Goode (Scottsville, VA); two
great-grandchildren Mckenna Sims and Connor Davis; several nieces, nephews,

VA).Muriel was a 1944 graduate of the Robert Packer School of Nursing. Her
career as a nurse spanned 42 years, part of which she served as head nurse at
Elmira College Infirmary and retired from the University of Virginia Medical
Center. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, quilting and times with her friends
and family. A celebration of her life will be held at the Church of Christ,
165 Miller St. Horseheads, on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. A reception

away Wednesday morning, March 16, 2011 at her home following declining health
at the age of 70. Jean is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Kenneth

Born on November 11, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA, Edna was the daughter of the
late, Philip & Clara Stiles Jago.
She married James William Spencer on October 24, 1941 in Elmira. They have
spent the last 70 years enjoying each other's company. Together they enjoyed
camping, traveling in their motor home, making scrap books of their travels,
photography, and baking apple pies.
Surviving is her loving family, husband of 70 years, James William Spencer;
children, Robert Spencer; Roger Spencer and Kirk (Melissa) Spencer;

Grace Little Hungerford. She was a devoted Christian and enjoyed people.

John William Dytman, 91, of 96 Greenridge Drive E., Elmira, passed away
from pneumonia at Arnot Ogden Hospital on Thursday March 10, 2011. He was born
February 24, 1920 in Germania, Pennsylvania to William and Eunice Dytman. He
graduated from Southside High School in 1939 and received an Associate's
Degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Alfred State University in 1941. In
October of 1941 he enlisted as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps
and became a navigator. On August 17, 1943 his B17 was shot down in a bombing
raid on Schweinfurt, Germany in the largest air battle of World War II, and he
spent twenty-one months as a prisoner of war. For wounds received, he was
awarded the Purple Heart medal. After four years in service then Lt. Dytman
returned to Elmira and married Marjorie Crum to whom he was married for
fifty-eight happy and loving years. He began working at Crum Electric with his
father-in-law Mike Crum, who had started the electrical contracting business
in 1920; when Mike retired, John changed the name of the business to Dytman
Electric. John also opened Dytman's Lightcraft Gallery in 1974. After
retirement, he took up a new profession, making historically accurate
reproductions of Colonial tin, brass and copper lighting fixtures which were
exhibited and sold at juried craft shows. He was a long-time member of both
Lake Street and First Presbyterian churches where he served as a deacon, and
as trustee of building and grounds. He was very active in the more than fifty
years he belonged to the Elmira Kiwanis Club and the Fur, Fin and Feathers
Club. He also belonged for many years to the Elmira Country Club, #95 Masonic
Lodge, Ex Prisoners of War, Disabled Veterans of America, the Junior
Achievement Board of Directors, the Boy Scout Council, the National Electrical
Contractors' Association (NECA) and most recently he worked as a volunteer at
the Wings of Eagles Museum and at BOCES. He loved the opportunity to talk to
middle school children about WWII and enjoyed the Remote Control Airplane
Club, and the Fly Fisherman Club and Tuesday lunches with friends. He was
passionate about his family, his wonderful friends, and his hobbies of
wood-working, fishing and flying remote control airplanes. He is survived by
his three children: Judy Baldwin (Douglas) and John "Jack" (Wendy)
of Los Angeles, and Nancy (Stephen Hand) of Ithaca, his grandchildren: William
and Samuel Baldwin, Zev (Mya Thompson) and Leah (Klaus Schoenwiese) Ross,
Christopher (April) and Mika Hand, and Katherine Hand Marshall (Nathaniel),
and great-grandchildren: Niko and Anya Ross and Mateo Schoenwiese, his sister:
Alberta Sullivan of Horseheads and brothers Arman of Colonie, New York and
Richard of Horseheads. His wife Marjorie passed away in 2003. He was also
predeceased by his brothers Merton, Walter and Norton. Caywoods Funeral Home
& Gardens is handling arrangements. Friends and family are invited to
calling hours from 1:30-3:30 Sunday, March 20th at the First Presbyterian
Church, 1054 W. Clinton Street, followed by a service there at 3:30.

Putnam, Katy
"Say not in grief she is no more but live in thankfulness that she
was"
Age 89, a life-long resident in New York State, passed away peacefully in her
home with those who loved her at her bedside. Katy P, as she was
affectionately known by her family and friends, was born on June 6, 1921 in
Warren County, NY. Katy moved all throughout her life and finally came
"home" in 2001 to Chemung ARC's Liberty St. residence. In Katy's
Golden Years, she kept a smile on her face and those around her on their toes
as she had that "tell it like it is" personality. Katy enjoyed
collecting items including classic movies, music, and dolls. Frank Sinatra was
a regular voice heard from her radio and Shirley Temple videos occupied her
television stand. Also, Katy had acquired quite an extensive doll collection
in her 89 years of life. She had a great love for animals, specifically cats.
Photographs that will carry on Katy's memory greatly depict how much love she
had for her feline friends. Katy is survived by her family and friends at
Chemung ARC. A special thanks goes out to NYSARC, INC., with a special tribute
to the guardianship committee, including Betty Butz, for their continued
support and companionship. A special thanks is also extended to the
Alzheimer's Association for all of their supports throughout the years.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 14, 2011, at Caywood's Funeral

Silver Star, Purple Heart and Bronze Star Recipient
A long time resident of the Southside community, passed away Sunday evening,
February 27, 2011 at the Bath Veterans Hospital following a declining health
at the age of 92.
Born on July 14, 1918 in Statesville , NC Bucky was the son of the late,
William & Bertha Mitchell Templeton.
In serving his country, Bucky served in the US Army during WWII. He was the
recipient of the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Bronze Star and fought in eight
campaigns. After returning home he married the love of his life, Helen Aber on
October 8, 1945 in Elmira.
An avid sportsman, Buck came to Elmira in the Yankee system and played
shortstop for the Elmira Pioneers. He was well known as a baseball coach for
countless kids for many years. Active in the community, Bucky was a member of
the American Legion Clarence Oliver Post # 154. A hard worker, Bucky was
employed by Thatcher Glass for 34 years, while there president of the
Thatcher's Men's Club and president of the GBBA Local 180 Union. A family man,
He was a good supporter and family man.
He cherished his family who survive, wife and companion of 65 years, Helen

William (Vickie) Templeton, Villa Rica, GA; James (Senada) Templeton,

Born on January 16, 1970 in Elmira, NY, Linda was the daughter of Edward &
Hazel Edminster Cratsley. She graduated from Elmira Free Academy. Linda held
many interests, she loved the outdoors and caring for animals. Possessing a
strong will, she was very independent. Linda was a devoted mother, daughter
and companion.

"Ike"
A resident of the Pine City community, passed away Sunday morning, January 30,
2011 at his home he shared with his longtime companion and friend, Carla
Rawlings following a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer at the age of
63.
Born on December 17, 1947 in Elmira, Ike was the son of the late, Floyd A.
& Elizabeth Ellis Rathbun. After graduating from Thomas A. Edison High
School, Ike attended, Somers Business School. In serving his country, he
enlisted with the US Navy and served 6 years during the Vietnam War and served
on the USS Knox. Ike was employed for over 25 years by the Elmira Housing
Authority as a Maintenance Foreman. His many interests included, camping,
fishing and classic cars. Ike was well known for his family business, Olde

Simoens, Chance E.
Of Elmira, passed away Thursday evening, January 27, 2011 as the result of a
motor vehicle accident at the age of 14.
Full of life and promise, Chance entered this world on November 22, 1996 in
Elmira, son of Donald & Patty Davis Simoens.
He was a freshman attending Southside High School. Chance enjoyed being a kid
and spent endless hours skateboarding, swimming, playing Hacky-Sack, pool and
basketball.
Surviving is his loving family, parents, Donald & Patty Davis Simoens;
brothers, Justin (Lena Cole) Davis, Donald Simoens II; sister, Stacia Simoens;

A lifelong resident of the Canton, PA community went home to be with her Lord
and Savior on Saturday morning, January 22, 2011 at the Bradford County Manor
following declining health at the age of 87.
Born on July 9, 1923 in Canton, PA, Jessie was the daughter of the late,
Barney & Myrtie Heath Kelley.
She was predeceased by her first husband, John E. Bryington in 1989 and her
second husband, Francis Terry in 2010. A born again Christian, Jessie was
attended the Lighthouse of Faith Church, Canton, PA and tried to set an
example of deeds, not words. She was well known for her gift of writing
poetry, was a correspondent for the Canton Independent Sentinel. She was
active at the McCallum Manor where she resided and planned many trips and
activities for the residents.

A long time resident of Hazel St. Southport, passed away Friday morning,
January 21, 2011 at Elderwood Health Care at Tioga following a lengthy illness
at the age of 83. Born on July 20, 1927 in Elmira, Marge was the daughter of
the late, Glen & Ruby Heller Wheeler. A homemaker, Marge enjoyed caring
for her home and family. In earlier years she was employed by the Remington
Rand and Westinghouse.
Surviving is her loving family, children, Sue (Joe) Kozak, Elmira; Carol
(Wayne) Allington, Southport; grandchildren, John (Stacye), Rick (Jennifer),

Born and raised in Ceuta, Spain; Virginia passed away Tuesday morning, January
4, 2011 at her Sterling, VA home in the care of her loving family at the age
of 42 following a courageous five year battle with cancer.

Belen Flesch at home; daughter, Mandi Hunsicker at school; mother, Carmen

"Mutt"
A long time resident of Gillett, Pa community passed away Wednesday evening,
January 5, 2011 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center where he had been a patient at
the age of 87.
Born on June 18, 1923 in Johnson City, son of the late Lester & Mary
Bohart Morgan, Mutt married his best friend, Myrtle Brown. He was employed by
Mt. Pisgah State Park, Troy, PA for many years until his retirement. Mutt was
a hard worker who mastered the craft of carpentry. His interests included
Snapper Lawn Mowers, Square Dancing, car rides, hunting, country fairs,
lottery tickets, gambling, quiet Sunday's with his family, playing music in
his family band and Willie Nelson. He is remembered for handing out blocks of
wood to family and encouraging them to create a masterpiece. Civic minded,
Mutt was a longtime member of the South Creek Lions Club where he was very
active, having received the Melvin Jones Award. He proudly served in the U.S.
Army during WWII. Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion of 63
years, Myrtle Brown Morgan; their children, Milo & Sandy Morgan, Gerald

"Butch"
A life-long resident of Caton went to be with his Lord from his home on
Tuesday evening, January 4, 2011 with his loving family and friends at his
side.
Born December 12, 1939 in Corning, Butch was the son of the late, Sylvester L.
and Iva B. Osborne Riley. He served his country in the United States Navy. He
married Patricia Ann Carpenter on August 21, 1965. Butch was employed for over
20 years by the Hilliard Corporation, and retired in July 2010. He was a hard
worker and an avid outdoorsman, and loved operating heavy equipment. Butch was
a member of the Caton Bible Chapel. Surviving is his loving family, wife and
companion of 45 years, Patricia Ann Carpenter Riley; daughters, Sundae Riley
Ennis (Denny Sly); Tammy (Tony) Martin; beloved granddaughter, Shannon Ennis;

& Gladys Snause Smith.
In earlier years he was employed by Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital where he
worked in the Maintenance Dept. An outdoorsman, Louis enjoyed hunting and
fishing.

Born on July 30, 1939 in Elmira, Clifford was the son of the late, Harry &
Jane Bellows Deery. He married Dawn Weston on Dec. 14, 1974 in Elmira Heights.
Clifford retired from Kennedy Valve after 34 years of dedicated service.
Clifford's interests included woodworking, fishing, boating, traveling and the
cherished memories spent with his family who survive. Loving wife and

A long time resident of Elmira passed away on Saturday morning, December 4,
2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital following declining health at the age of 85.
Born on November 6, 1925, Bill was the son of the late Catherine Brooks. In
service to his country, he enlisted in the United States Army during WWII.
Bill married Shirley Bernard on July 14, 1951 at Centenary United Methodist
Church. He was employed by A&P Foods as a forklift operator until their
closing, after which was employed by Elmira College for many years and also
drove truck for Stanley Home Products until his retirement. Mechanically
gifted, he enjoyed working on vehicles. Bills first love was that of his
family and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.
Surviving is his wife and companion of nearly sixty years, Shirley Bernard
Brooks; their loving daughter, Cheryl (Frank Buckley) Payne, Horseheads;
beloved grandchildren, Diana (Matt Dougherty) Payne, MA; Lisa (Jeff) Romig,
Elmira; love of his life, great granddaughter, Gabrielle Hope Romig.

& Helen Mayo Shook. Bobs passion in life was bowling. He was well known
and developed many close friendships around the sport. He enjoyed traveling to
the annual American Bowling Congress National Tournaments. He was previously
employed by Lowell Warters Pro Shop, Crystal Lanes, Corning; and Flamingo
Bowl, Liverpool, NY.

Kauffman, Edward J.
Of Pine City passed away peacefully Sunday, November 28, 2010, with family at
his side as he ended his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Born on September 28, 1921 in Bayard Nebraska, Eddie was the son of the late
Henry & Amelia Kauffman and came from humble beginnings. He was a
"fun loving guy" and the twinkle in those blue eyes will be greatly
missed. Edward served his country in the United States Air Force and trained
as a motor mechanic. He was a self made business man and owned and operated
Kauffman's Auto and R.V. Sales until age 82. Edward never missed a day of
work. In his earlier years he raced stock cars and he enjoyed bowling. Ed was
a "Die Hard Yankee Fan". He was predeceased by his first wife,
Madeline Raymond Kauffman; four brothers and three sisters. Mr. Kauffman is
survived by his devoted wife, Dolores Kauffman, Pine City, son, Eddie (Dorleen)
Kauffman, Elmira, Judy (David) Kinkade, Elmira, Denise Buono, Pine City,
Pamela Kauffman, Pine City; sister, Hilda Ummel, Scottsbluff, NE and favorite
niece, Dorothy Cellini, North Aurora, IL; five grandchildren, Kristine (Steve)

A long time resident of the Southport community passed peacefully from this
life in to the arms of his Lord on Wednesday evening, November 24, 2010
unexpectedly at the age of 81. Born on January 27, 1929 in Elmira Richard was
the adopted son of the late Alvin & Edna VanGorder Adams. He married June
F. Kinner in 1949 they shared a happy and loving marriage until her passing on
October 25, 2010. Dick was employed by several railroads as an engineer until
he retired form Conrail after 42 years of dedicated service. Richard and June
enjoyed dinning out, playing cards and seeing their many friends socially.

Formerly of Elmira, NY passed away, Wednesday, November 17, 2010 in Pembroke
Pines, FL where he resided for the last 15 years at the age of 60.
Born on March 12, 1950 in Elmira, Michael was the son of Michael A. Sr. &
Delores Hanlon Savino.
While residing in Florida, Michael was employed by All Packaging Supply's as a
salesman. He enjoyed socializing playing golf and cards.

Of Pine City became part of the choirs of angels on Tuesday, November 16, 2010
with family and friends at his side, he ended his courageous battle with
Alzheimer's Disease.
Born on July 26, 1934, Bill was the son of the late Paul & Alice Kelley
Carnegie. He served his country in the United States Maries during the Korean
Conflict. Bill was a communicant of St. Mary's Parish and a member of the
Rochester Cursillo Movement. He retired from Hardinge Brothers Inc. where he
was employed for over 18 years. Prior to that time he had been employed by
American LaFrance. His family was the most important part of his life. He is
survived by his loving and devoted wife, Rosalie Cicci Carnegie. On July 2,
2010, they celebrated 50 years of marriage. Together they were blessed with
three loving and caring children, Suzanne (Robert) Buelow, Easton, PA; William
(Lisa Johnson) Carnegie, Pine City; Kathleen (Bradlee) Confer, Tioga, PA; the
jewels in his crown are his eight grandchildren, Robert W., Jessica R. and
Heidi L. Buelow, Easton, PA; Dominique A. and Erica R. Carnegie, Pine City;
Brandyn L. (fiancée, Brittany Conklin), Jordyn D. and Daltyn J. Confer, Tioga
PA. Bill was blessed with a great grandson, Romeo Casado, who was born on
November 8, 2010 in Easton, PA; Bill is also survived by his brother, Dennis
(Theresa Shon) Kelley, Troy, PA; along with many nieces and nephews.
Bill loved sports of all kinds, whether a participant or spectator. He was an
active bowler, member of the Hardinge Golf League, and loved deer hunting,
traveling, playing cards and simply enjoying family and friends, Bill and his
family were active volunteers Alzheimer's Association in raising funds for
their annual Memory Walk.

Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens,
1126 Broadway, Southport, on Thursday, November 18, 2010 between the hours of
3-5 and 7-9 p.m. A Friday morning prayer service will take place at the
funeral home at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's
Church at 9:30 a.m. Full military honors will be accorded Mr. Carnegie in
Woodlawn National Cemetery following the Mass. Interment will take place at
the families convenience in Sts. Peter & Paul's Cemetery at a later date.

A long time resident of Elmira, passed away on Wednesday evening, November 10,
2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital following declining health at the age of 71.
Born on October 16, 1939 in Waverly, NY son of the late Charles & Ida
Collins Corbin. After graduating from Waverly High School, Ed served his
country in the United States Navy. He remained patriotic the rest of his life
and was a member of the American Legion. Ed married, Iona Harvey on June 13,
1992 in the Town of Ashland. He was employed by A&P Foods from the
building of the Horseheads plant until its closing. Ed was also employed by
Thomas & Betts Corp. until his retirement. A musician, Ed played the organ
for jazz bands. He enjoyed sports and family gatherings at his home.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion of 18 years, Iona Harvey
Corbin;
daughter, Amy Corbin; stepsons, Jack Knapp, Earl (Sheila) Knapp, Allan, Knapp
and
Tim Knapp; sister, Sylvia Bernard) Skolny; nephews, David and Steven Geiss;
sister-in-law, Patricia (Phil) Thomas; twelve grandchildren and three great
grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens,
1126 Broadway, Southport, on Monday, November 15, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. Funeral
services will follow the visitation at 6:15 p.m. with the Reverend David
Daniels officiating. Graveside services will take place in Fitzsimmons
Cemetery, Southport on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. where full military honors
will be accorded Mr. Corbin.
Caywood, Alice Montene
A longtime resident of South Broadway, Wellsburg, NY went home to be with the
Lord peacefully at her home under the care of her family, wonderful friends
and Southern Tier Hospice on Tuesday morning, November 9, 2010.
Montene was born in Willoughby, Ohio daughter of the late, Montage R &
Pamelia "Polly" Harrison Holland.
She grew up in the town of Mills, PA with her loving mother, Pamelia and her
baby brother, Bobby. She married Arthur Caywood on August 30, 1941 in Harrison
Valley, PA and he predeceased her on May 22, 2006 following 65 years of
marriage. Montene attended Nursing School in Rochester, never completing to
better devote time to her family. A born again Christian, Montene spent her
life witnessing to others. A former member of the Fassett Baptist Church,
founding member of the South Creek Evangelical Church, member of the
Horseheads First Baptist Church; she presently attended Fassett Baptist Church
when able.
A homemaker, Montene was very proud of the home she and Arthur built 60 years
ago on the South Creek Rd. They enjoyed filling their home with the antiques
they refinished together. She loved living in the country, spending time
outdoors, hiking at every opportunity and rides in the car especially when
they took her to her childhood home in Mills, PA. Montene held a warm spot in
her heart for those in need, especially animals. She enjoyed classical music
and church hymns.
Montene lived for her children who survive, daughters and sons-in-law,
Jeannette M. & Thomas Congdon, Pine City, NY; Sheila E. & Bo Jennings
Fink, Strasburg, VA; son, James A. Caywood, Southport, NY; four grandchildren,
Rebecca & Dave Davis, Lisa & James Epp, Scott Congdon, and Michael
Fink; eight great grandchildren, Ashtin and Brady Davis, Rachel, Stephen,
Daniel, Nathan and Elisabeth Epp and Brooke Binford; sister-in-law, Betty
Morgan, Millport; along with many nieces, nephews and cherished family
friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Montene was the last living sibling of
seven.
Our family will receive relatives and friends at Caywood's Funeral Home &
Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport, on Sunday, November 14, 2010 between the
hours of 4-7 p.m. Funeral services officiated by the Reverend Sherwood Sawyer
and her friend the Reverend Donald Rockwell will be held privately on Monday.
The "Circle of Life" will be completed when she is interred in the
Mills Cemetery, Mills, PA beside her beloved mother, Pamelia Monday afternoon.
Memorial donations in her memory may be directed to the church of your choice,
Missions Fund to further spread the Gospel.
Thank you to the wonderful caregivers and friends who made Mom's final days so
special and who allowed her to pass at home where she longed to be. May God

Caywood, Arthur L.
A longtime resident of South Broadway, Wellsburg, NY went home to be with the
Lord on Monday morning, May 22, 2006 peacefully in the home he built fifty six
years ago within the care of his family, wonderful friends and Southern Tier
Hospice at the age of 86. Art was born in Elmira on March 14, 1920, son of
Hazel MacDougal Caywood. He learned at an early age the importance of hard
work as he left school to help support his mother and siblings. He worked on a
farm in Himrod through his teen years. Art married Alice Montene Holland on
August 30, 1941 in Harrison Valley, PA. In honor of his brother, James E.
Caywood who was killed in Italy during WWII, Arthur joined the United States
Navy. While in service, his ship came under enemy fire and several of his
comrades lost their lives. Following the war, he returned home to raise a
family. A skilled carpenter, he built several homes in the area. He was well
known within his trade as a Tool & Die Maker. A quiet unassuming
gentlemen, Art found enjoyment in family outings, traveling to Virginia,
dining out, quiet afternoons at the lake and most especially a long day of
golf with his buddies at the Mark Twain Golf Course. He was proud of his
family and always encouraged us to do better. His hard work and sacrifices
made it possible for his family to have an easier life than he had growing up.
Surviving is his loving family, including his wife of 65 years, Alice Montene
Holland Caywood; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannette & Thomas Congdon,
Pine City; Sheila & Bo Jennings Fink, Strausburg, VA; a son, James Caywood,
Southport; four grandchildren, Rebecca & Dave Davis, Lisa & James Epp,
Scott Congdon, and Michael Fink; seven great grandchildren, Ashton Davis,
Rachel, Stephen, Daniel, Nathan and Elizabeth Epp and Brooke Congdon Binford;
a sister, Mary Caywood Rice, Elmira Heights; sisters-in-law, Betty Morgan,
Millport and Edna Mascho, Horseheads; several nieces, nephews and his church
family at Fassett Baptist, along with many cherished family friends and the
companion he had made in his little dog "Corky".
In addition to his mother, Hazel, and his brother, James, Art was also
predeceased by his brother, Harold Morgan, and his sister, Joyce Fielder.

Broadway, Southport, on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 between the hours of 2-4 and
7-9 p.m. Funeral services officiated by his pastor and friend the Reverend
Donald Rockwell and the Reverend Richard Farrell will be private. Art will be
accorded full military honors and will be buried in Bath National Cemetery,
Bath, NY. Memorial donations may be directed to the Fassett Baptist Church Ice
Cream Social Fund, 36089 Rt. 14, Gillett, PA 16925 in his memory.

Bennett, Helen
A long time resident of the Southport community was reunited with her beloved
Richard following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, January 13,
2005 peacefully in their home.
Helen was a Private Duty Nurse and cared for many area families during an
illness or through their elderly years. Some of her patients she served for
many years. In later years she brought comfort to countless families in her
service to Caywood's. She made families feel at home and assured each one
their needs would be cared for, and did it with the outmost grace, style and
class.
Helen's many interest included dinning out at her favorite local restaurants,
walking countless miles in her community, making sure her friends never did
with out, and spending time with the love of her life, Richard Bennett until
his passing in 1994.
Helen is survived be a community of close friends who cherished having her in
our lives. We love you Helen and will never forget the imprint you have left
on our hearts. |
